The Short Story Challenge

The Literate Kitten has offered up a short story challenge. It looks easy enough - pick a short story to read and nominate a favorite short story for others to read. Sounds fun, doesn't it?!

Medical Mystery Madness Challenge - 2007

Debbie at Caught Between Worlds is thinking about hosting a Medical Mystery challenge between June 1st and September 30th.

She says:

"The idea would be to pick anywhere from 2 or more medical mysteries/thrillers to read and discuss with fellow medical thriller fans. As people come up with their lists, there would be the possibility of others wanting to read the same books. Those who wanted to could then do buddy reads. And seeing others' lists would give us more ideas of other medical thrillers out there that we might not be aware of yet."

She has a mini book journal as a prize, too!

Debbie is waiting to see how many people are interested before starting this one. So pop on over to her blog and let her know what you think!

*UPDATED 4/14/2007:

Looks like this one is a go. Debbi is putting a Linky post for sign-ups next week sometime.

Title Based ~A to Z Reads Challenge - 2007

Another challenge inspired by Thoughts of Joy!

I've been seeing this one out there in the blogosphere and there are some variations on the theme. Some readers having challenged themselves to also read A to Z by author as well as title. Either way, the goal is to cover the alphabet in one year of reading.

Personal Genre Challenge - 2007

Joy at Thoughts of Joy came up with this personal reading challenge. There is no set number of books to read -

She is simply keeping a separate record of the books read during 2007 which are outside her comfort zone. The challenge is to reach out and pick up books she wouldn't normally give a second glance or even go near.

Anyone up for this one???

M and Ns Summer Seven Challenge

May 1st to September 1st 2007

Sign up deadline: April 30th

Nessie over at The Biblio Files has a demanding challenge set up for the summer. Read a series of 7 books ... not just any 7 books, but one of the following:

1. In Search of Lost Time, by Marcel Proust (7 volumes)
2. Malazan Book of the Fallen series, by Steven Erickson (7 volumes)
3. The Complete Novels of the Bronte Sisters (7 volumes)

She's allowing some variation - with email approval by her - but participants must read a series of seven volumes no matter what!

There will be gift certificates to an online bookstore for those who complete the challege. (And possibly other goodies such as books, book marks, etc.).

BUT, there is a catch. Those who do not complete the challenge will be REQUIRED to make a donation of a book or money to Brainwash Books, an organization which provides cheap books for University students.

Why not join Kailana in her O'Canada Challenge. Looks like she's picking 12 Canadian authors to read over the next year!

Banned Books Challenge

I don't believe in censorship of books. One of the freedoms we are supposed to have in the United States is the freedom of speech, and so book banning or book challenges seem to go against everything for which the United States stands. Men and women have died to preserve our freedoms. And yet, every year books are banned in this country.

Because of this, I have made a point of reading banned books. I belong to a Yahoo book group which devotes itself to reading only banned books. Additionally, Pelham Public Library's Fahrenheit 451: Banned Book Blog has challenged readers to celebrate their freedom by reading as many banned books as they can between February 26th and June 30th.
