Planet Earth 2008 Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2008

In honor of the UN International Year of Planet Earth, Sylvia from Classical Bookworm is hosting the Planet Earth 2008 Reading Challenge. Sylvia says:

I thought I'd take the opportunity to brush up on my earth science. I've always been fascinated by geology and associated disciplines, but haven't delved into them much. I did take a geology course in university but it wasn't much of a success because of all the uninspiring memorization that was required. However I find that when geoscience it is presented in the right way, it can be completely fascinating and even mindblowing.

She lists the ten themes for the Year of the Planet and gives some interesting links to jump start your reading. There are no set number of books to read. Go here to learn more.

Beg, Borrow or Steal - A Challenge on Nattie's Blog

January 1 - 31, 2008

Hosted at The Nattie Challenge Blog, the Beg Borrow or Steal Challenge encourages readers to:

Read a book that is not yours or a book that someone has given to you. Not a book they gave you because you wanted it, but a book they gave you because THEY loved it and wanted to share it with you. A book someone suggested to you (even if you have to buy the actual copy you read) is what I am getting at.

This challenge is in honor of Nattie - a fellow reader, blogger and challenge lover who left this world far too early.

To join, go here and leave a comment.

2008 A to Z Reading Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2008

Joy at Thoughts of Joy is once again hosting the A~Z Reading Challenge. The idea is simple:

~ complete the alphabet lists anyway that suits your fancy
(i.e.: complete each list separately in alphabetical order, read both "A" entries, then "B" entries, fit whatever you're reading into any list, etc.)

~ complete the challenge in the year 2008

~ enjoy the experience!

Day To Read: January 10, 2008

January 10, 2008

Soccer Mom in Denial is hosting a Day To Read. Stunned by statistics like these:
  • only 30% of 13-year-olds read almost every day
  • the number of 17-year-olds who never read for pleasure increased from 9 percent in 1984 to 19 percent in 2004 - that is 1 in 5 kids don't read for fun
  • Almost half of Americans between ages 18 and 24 never read books for pleasure
  • The average person between ages 15 and 24 spends 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day watching TV and 7 minutes reading
...she wants us all to get off our computers, turn off the television, and READ on one dedicated day of the year. Sounds right to me!

If you want to participate, leave Soccer Mom a comment, then promote reading by posting this challenge on your blog. On January 11th, share what you read.
