Young Adult Literature Challenge

No official start date to April 20, 2008

Alyssa at The Shady Glade Blog is hosting the Young Adult Literature Challenge. Overlaps with other challenges are allowed; no lists are required. The goal is to read at least one book that covers each of these 9 categories:
  • Contemporary/Realistic Fiction
  • Poetry, Drama, or Humor (any of these will work)
  • Sports, Mystery, Supernatural/Paranormal (any of these will work)
  • Fantasy or Science Fiction
  • Historical Fiction
  • Nonfiction
  • Classic “juvenile” fiction (first published pre-1920)
  • Graphic Novel
  • Audiobook
BUT, you can overlap categories, so you don't necessarily have to commit to reading nine books! You may only read one book per author.

There are lots of prizes...and an opportunity to "dial up" the challenge and do "extra credit."

For sign ups and all the information about this challenge, visit Alyssa at the challenge post.

Chunkster Challenge - 2008

January 7 - December 20, 2008

*******************************

January 19, 2008 UPDATE:
If you want to be eligible for prizes for the Chunkster Challenge, you must provide a link to your reviews at the Feeling Chunky blog.

*******************************

The lovely Dana at So Many Books, So Little Time has agreed to host the Chunkster Challenge this year as Bookfool (last year's host) is unable to do it. Sign ups are on Dana's blog here. Rules are:

  • To qualify the book must be 450 pps regular type OR 750 pps large text.
  • You must read FOUR chunksters (one each quarter), you OBVIOUSLY may read more
  • The Challenge will run Jan 7th, 2008 - Dec 20th, 2008 (the only chunky thing occupying my mind over Christmas is ME! AND I am using my foresight remembering my inbox on Dec 31st/ Jan 1 of THIS year when all the challenges ended). BUT any chunkster started after Jan 1 qualifies.
  • OH THERE WILL BE PRIZES - one a quarter. Prizes to be determined later ( so making the rules on the fly here, peeps). Think small and fun, not big and chunky.
  • Sharing reviews mandatory, format still to be determined.
  • Join by leaving me a WEE comment. I will work on a list of active participants to be shared here. There is a sign-up deadline of March 1st, so tell your friends and neighbors but only until then.
(***Psttttttt, Dana, thank you for not having this one end on December 31st!)

The Science Book Challenge

Current to the end of 2008

Jeff from Bearcastle Blog is hosting the Science Book Challenge. He is part of a group of people who are working on a project for Book Notes on line. This challenge will become part of that project. Here is what he says:

Read three nonfiction books this year related to the theme "Living a Rational Life", broadly construed. Each book should have something to do with science, how science operates, or science's relationship with its surrounding culture. The books might be popularizations of science, they might be history, they might be biography, they might be anthologies.
After you've read it, write a short note about the book; 500 words would suffice. What goes in the note? The things you would tell a friend if you wanted to convince said friend to read it, too. Naturally, you can read some of the existing Book Notes for ideas.
Don't worry if you find that you've read a book someone else has also read; we welcome multiple notes on one title.
If you're interested in participating, go to Jeff's post about the challenge and leave him a comment.

Royalty Rules Reading Challenge

February 1 - April 30, 2008

Ink Mage at The Magic of Ink is hosting The Royalty Rules Reading Challenge.

Rules: Read two, three, or four books of whatever genre you choose, whether you want to read about historical kings, modern queens, or fairytale princesses. The only parameter is that the books have are about a royal personage, although not necessarily as the main character. It’s perfectly all right if you want to read a book about, say, the queen’s lady-in-waiting, as long as the story incorporates the rise and/or fall of a crowned head, or a sovereign’s entire life.

Crossovers with other challenges are allowed. There are terrific links to possible reading lists for this challenge located on Ink Mage's post about the challenge.

Sign ups are here through Mr. Linky!

Planet Earth 2008 Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2008

In honor of the UN International Year of Planet Earth, Sylvia from Classical Bookworm is hosting the Planet Earth 2008 Reading Challenge. Sylvia says:

I thought I'd take the opportunity to brush up on my earth science. I've always been fascinated by geology and associated disciplines, but haven't delved into them much. I did take a geology course in university but it wasn't much of a success because of all the uninspiring memorization that was required. However I find that when geoscience it is presented in the right way, it can be completely fascinating and even mindblowing.

She lists the ten themes for the Year of the Planet and gives some interesting links to jump start your reading. There are no set number of books to read. Go here to learn more.
