  • Complete all 12 mini-challenges between January 1st and December 31st, 2009.
  • Challenges can be completed in any order.
  • Overlaps are allowed.
  • IF you are a member of the Yahoo group, you do not need a blog to participate. IF you are NOT a member of the Yahoo group, you will need a blog.
  • Sign up by either joining the Novel Challenge Yahoo group OR leave me a comment on the post about the challenge.
  • Have fun! Challenge yourself to do something literary every month of the year!
Here are the 12 challenges:
  1. Read a collection of short stories and either blog about it, OR tell the group about what you read.
  2. Read a play. Blog about it, OR tell the group about your experience.

  8. Make a donation. You can either donate to an organization that supports reading OR make a physical donation of a book (or books) to ANYONE. Blog about it or tell the group what you did.
  9. Promote literacy. This is wide open - use your imagination. You could give a child a book, or read a book to someone who cannot read, or volunteer at an event which promotes literacy, or donate to your local library, or write something on your blog with a link to a group which promotes literacy, or anything in between. The only rule with this one is that you must PROMOTE literacy in some way…
  10. Participate in a buddy read or Group discussion. This can be a face to face group, an on-line group or a one on one discussion with a friend who read the same book. Either way, blog about your experience or share with the group. Did the discussion give you greater appreciation or insight into what you read?
  11. Read a book outside your comfort level or from a genre you don’t normally read. Blog about it, or tell the group about it.
  12. Read a classic (defined as anything published before 1970). Tell us why it fits the category of being a classic. Write a review or tell the group about the book.

The Modern Library's 100 Best Novels Challenge

Perpetual Challenge - No Time Limit

Sharon at Ex Libris is hosting The Modern Library's 100 Best Novels Challenge - a perpetual challenge to read from this interesting list. Sharon writes:

This is a perpetual challenge to read the The Board's List of 100 best novels from The Modern Library. It can also include The Reader's List of 100 best novels and, if you are really ambitious, the Radcliffe's Rival 100 best novels list. (Don't worry, this really isn't a total of 300 books. Some titles appear on more than one list.)
Sharon has started a dedicated blog for the challenge. Participants may join the blog to post reviews, or simply post to their own blog and provide links to their reviews.

To sign up or get permission to post to the blog, visit Sharon and let her know!

Montgomery Mini Challenge 2009

January 1 - November 30, 2009

Maria at Reading My Way Through Life is hosting the Montgomery Mini Challenge which honors author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Maria writes:

There are so many wonderful books by Lucy Maud Montgomery that get overlooked because most readers only know about the Anne-series, and aren't aware that she wrote more than 20 novels as well as several short-stories and poems. I think that's a shame, so therefore this challenge to introduce people to the rest of her work.
The rules are:
  1. Read books of LMM that aren't part of the Anne series.
  2. How many books should you read? Well, up to you really, but at least four, in order to get a proper variety of her work.
  3. Audiobooks and E-books are allowed.
  4. Books can be used for other challenges as well.

Links to all her novels are here. For a complete list of her works (including short-stories, poetry and non-fiction) go here.

Sign up by leaving a comment on the post about the challenge with a link to your post. If you don't have a blog, just post the list in the comments.

World Citizen Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2009

UPDATE DECEMBER 28, 2008: There is now a dedicated blog for this challenge. To sign up visit the sign up post.

***********************

Eva at A Striped Armchair is hosting the World Citizen Challenge. She writes:

There are a ton of challenges focused on almost every aspect of fiction imaginable, but not very many on non-fiction. So, hopefully all of those with ‘inner bookworms’ (as Bybee calls it) guilt-tripping you for not reading enough non-fiction will be interested. And, of course, all of you who love non-fiction should be perking up too!

I struggled with what to call this challenge, but I finally decided on World Citizen. That’s because, in this day and age, it’s important for all of us to know something about the world around us.
Eva has set up several participation levels:

  1. The Prospie Level - This is for those of you with no time to read another book, but who still want to do something. There will be a different mini-challenge each month of the challenge, and all you have to do to be a prospie is say you want to participate in at least one of them. There will be prizes!
  2. The Auditor Level - For this level, you just need to declare your interest in the challenge. Anything else you might want to do: the mini-challenges, making a list of potential books, participating in the discussions, etc. is completely up to you. Maybe you want to commit to reading a newspaper or magazine instead of a book-go for it.
  3. The World Citizenship 101 Level - For this level, you need to commit to one book.
  4. The Minor Level - For this level, you need to commit to three books, from at least two different categories (listed on the post about the challenge).
  5. The Major Level - For this level, you need to commit to five books, from at least three different categories.
  6. The Postgraduate Level - For this level, you need to commit to seven books, including one book from each category.
There is a lot more information on the post about the challenge - and Eva is setting up a dedicated blog as well.

Diversity Rocks Challenge

Ali from Worducopia is hosting the Diversity Rocks Challenge. Ali writes:

Ali has made this challenge accessible to everyone by providing a multitude of "levels of participation" from reading only one book, to reading up to 24 books, to simply including this challenge as part of another challenge you are doing, to being a cheerleader.

To read more about the levels of participation and to sign up with Mr. Linky, visit Ali's post about the challenge on the dedicated blog.

Martel-Harper Challenge

Quarterly, Perpetual Challenge

UPDATE DECEMBER 28, 2008

In the fourth quarter of 2008, Dewey began the Martel-Harper Challenge. This challenge is to read two books during the quarter from the list that Yann Martel sends Stephen Harper, a list that is always growing.

Dewey wrote:

You may know that Yann Martel sends books to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper every two weeks. He’s sent 38 so far, and you can read the letters he sends along with them at that site. For our challenge, I propose that we also read those books. I’ll ask people to sign up quarterly, committing to two to three books each time they sign up.
Dewey passed away shortly before Thanksgiving 2008, but many bloggers are continuing her events and challenges in her honor. Rebecca from Rebecca Reads has picked up the Martel-Harper Challenge. To read about the challenge and to link to (and sign up for) the first quarter of the challenge, visit the Hub Page for the Challenge.

2009 TBR Lite Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2009

UPDATE: SIGN UPS FOR THIS CHALLENGE ARE NOW OPEN. Visit the post about the challenge and leave a comment.

For those of you who felt too much "pressure" with the TBR challenge, Jenn has created another option for you. The TBR Lite Challenge for 2009 is designed to get readers to read from their TBR mountains.

You have your choice of ONE of the 3 options:

OPTION A: read 6 books in 12 months ~ your list of books CANNOT be changed, but you are allowed to have an “Alternates” list to choose from (like in the Original TBR Challenge).

OPTION B: read 6 books in 12 months ~ you CAN change you reading list throughout the year

OPTION C: make up a list of however many books you think you could get read in 12 months, as long as they are from your TBR stack/list, and then read them between January 1st and December 31st

General Guidelines:
  • You must have at least 3 books on your list.
  • You are allowed to overlap with other challenges
  • Audiobooks are allowed
  • e-Books are allowed, but must still be books that you’ve wanted to read for at least 3, or more, months
  • You should still have a list of books posted somewhere for others to see
  • You don’t have to read your books in the order you put them on your list.
There is a Yahoo Group for this challenge.

2009 TBR Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Jenn is once again hosting the TBR Challenge for 2009. Here are the rules:
  • The challenge is to read 12 TBR books in 12 months -- you can read those all in one month if you want, or one a month, or however you wanna do it.
  • You need to have a list posted somewhere for others to see
  • You CANNOT change your list after January 1st, 2009!!!
  • You can create an Alternates list of MAXIMUM 12 books, if you want, in order to have options to choose from (you can read these in place of books on your original list).
  • Audiobooks and e-books ARE allowed
  • Re-reads are NOT allowed, as they aren't TRUE "TBRs"
  • You CAN overlap with other challenges
OPTIONAL: you can join the Yahoo! Group created for participants of the TBR Challenge, if you want to have a place to keep your list, or just to share with others about how you're doing!

There are LOTS of new buttons for 2009 on the post about the challenge. To sign up with Mr. Linky and for more information, go to the post about signups.

**Please note, for those readers not wanting to commit to 12 books, Jenn is also hosting the TBR Lite Challenge.

  • reviews can be as short, or long, as you wish
  • you MAY overlap with other challenges
  • eBooks and Audiobooks ARE allowed

You can also include a blurb about where to find the item if it is on your site or what you think made the search engine drop them off at your site or any other comments.

I’m only 12 pages into a book about the history of libraries and it reminds me of a goal I had for myself back when I first started High School. I wanted to read every single book in the library before I graduated High School. I even checked out 5 books, one from each section (nonfiction, children’s, adult, etc). The first nonfiction book I read was of a scientists from Texas who swore he was abducted by aliens. My goal frittered out after that book.
I’ve decided that in 2009, I’m going to revive this lofty goal for myself, but with a few modifications. Instead of trying to read every single book, I’m going to follow the Dewey Decimal System, and read 1 book from each Dewey century.
The Dewey Chain goes as follows:
000 - Generalities
100 - Philosophy and Psychology
200 - Religion
300 - Social Sciences
400 - Language
500 - Natural Sciences + Math
600 - Technology
700 - The Arts
800 - Literature and Rhetoric
900 - Geography and History
The Novel World is asking interested readers to join in. Leave a comment on the post about the challenge to work with the host to come up with some fun monthly topics and points of view for that month’s Dewey category.

2009 Caribbean Reading Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Scavella at Scavella's Blogosphere is hosting the 2009 Caribbean Reading Challenge where participants commit to read by the end of 2009 six books written by Caribbean writers or that deal significantly with Caribbean people and/or issues.

The rules are:
  1. Create a blog post with your list of books to read for the challenge.
  2. When you read a book, write a review of it and post it on your blog. Then leave a comment on the page about the challenge with your blog-name and the book you are reviewing with a link to the review.
Scavella writes:
I’ve narrowed the challenge down somewhat, partly because the Caribbean’s probably one of the most misrepresented regions in literature, and I deliberately excluded books that take merely place in the Caribbean. Read them if you like, but try do so in the light of books written by/about Caribbean people. Often our islands (these generic, featureless “islands”) are no more than backdrops for the activities of “real” people. If you asked me, Christie’s A Caribbean Mystery, while a fun read, wouldn’t count for the challenge; nor would the hundreds of Harlequin romances of various flavours that are set on the Spanish Main (a.k.a. the Caribbean Sea) or on endless stretches of beach with funny-talking natives. Read them by all means; just don’t count ‘em.

Dewey's Books Reading Challenge

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Chris at Stuff Dreams Are Made Of and Robin at A Fondness for Reading are hosting a very special challenge in honor of Dewey from The Hidden Side of A Leaf. Chris writes:

Dewey was such a prolific reader and her reviews were honest, intriguing, and beautifully written. What better way to celebrate her wonderful life than by having a year long challenge in her name!
Dewey's Books Reading Challenge asks participants to visit Dewey's blog and peruse her archives. Then do one of the following:

1. Pick one book from each of the 6 years of which Dewey has archives. You can access her archives by clicking on the archive link in the sidebar of her website. It’s a dropdown menu. For instance, you would read one book that she reviewed in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 for a total of six books.
2. The other option is to read 5 books that Dewey reviewed. These can be from any year.

There will be Mr. Linky's to link to reviews, and a prize draw or two.

War Through The Generations Challenge 2009

January 1 - December 31, 2009

Anna from Diary of an Eccentric and Serena from Savvy Verse and Wit have started a dedicated blog for challenges related to war and its impact. They write:

We have always been interested in war and its impact, so naturally, our first hosted reading challenge would be about this theme. Rather than host a single challenge on the very broad topic of war, we decided to break it down into several challenges over the long term. We hope you’ll join us, whether it’s only for one challenge or more. (We’re pretty obsessive about our reading, so we’ve planned a few years in advance.) We plan on holding six-month to one-year challenges, so check back to find one that tickles your fancy.
Their first challenge beginning January 1, 2009 is World War II. Readers must commit to reading at least five books throughout the year. Anna and Serena write:

The books can be fiction or non-fiction, and they can be about any aspect of WWII. WWII should be the primary or secondary theme, and it doesn’t matter whether the book takes place during the war or after the war.
There is a link for suggested reading as well.

There will be a prize drawing for those participants who meet or exceed their reading goal!

Go to the post about the 2009 Challenge to read more and to sign up. Sign ups are ongoing, but if you want to be included in the prize giveaway, you must sign up no later than January 31st.
