2012 Audio Book Challenge

2012 Audio Book Challenge Hosted by Teresa’s Reading Corner

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

Welcome to the Original Audio Book Challenge formerly hosted by Alaine at Queen of Happy Endings. This challenge is for Audio Book lovers as well as those who are brand new to them.

I’ve been listening to your feedback and I’m convinced that the 2012 challenge is going to be better than ever. There will still be targets for achievement, but I’m raising them a bit since many of our participants are avid audio book listeners.

Once again, there are four levels to the challenge

  • Flirting-Listen to 6 Audio Books
  • Going Steady- Listen to 12 Audio Books
  • Lover- Listen to 25 Audio Books
  • Married-Listen to +++  Audio Books

*A big Thank You to fellow blogger and twitter buddy @dogearedcopy for her suggestions on the level names.

There will be a monthly link up so that we can share what we’ve listened to and make suggestions to each other. Along with that monthly link up there will be a special monthly challenge so make sure you stop by each month!

Inspired by Beth Fish Reads and There’s A Book I’m going to be adding a feature (still unnamed) in which we get to know Audio Book Publishers. I’ll be asking them about what they’ve got coming up as well as about their back list titles and of course, the chance to win an Audio Book or two!

I’ll also be adding a feature in which we can get to know our fellow participants. If you are interested in appearing in this feature, please fill out the attached google form.

I hope I’ve enticed you to join in the 2012 Audio Book Challenge. I’m really looking forward to reading your reviews and experiences over the next year.

Official Challenge dates: 1/1/2012-12/31/2012

Get Steampunked! 2012 Reading Challenge

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

Here we are again with Get Steampunked!, the second year running and hopefully it will be just as good a year as last! There are some differences this time, thanks to a new year, new place, and some experience. Have a read below, if you have any questions ask away, and the most important part of it is to have fun.

What Is Steampunk?

If you’re not sure what Steampunk is think of stories that are Victoriana in style, but futuristic as well with steam powered gadgets and machines made out of the spare parts around you. Zephyrs, blimps, and steam trains are some of the vehicles you’d see, ladies and gents in Victoriana dress. Or the other extreme where it’s the industrial side of Steampunk, the dirty almost cyber side of it.

Check out these websites for a better idea – Steampunk Workshop, Steampunk Lab, Steampunk Emporium, Aether Emporium, and SteamPunk Magazine.

For ideas of what to read we have a list of 15 books to get you started or for inspiration.

2012 Dean Koontz Reading Challenge

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

No matter if you haven't read a book by him before or whether you know them all, this challenge is for both newbies as well as fans. It doesn't matter whether it's his latest novel or a re-read, every book with Dean's name on it counts! I'm a huge fan of Dean Koontz, so in my case it will be mostly re-reading, preferably of older books. If you should need some recommendations, don't hesitate to ask. And here's a little helper: Dean Koontz Book List

3 Books - Odd Thomas' Mailman

6 Books - Odd Thomas' Neighbor (this will be the one I'm settling for)

9 Books - Odd Thomas' Best Friend

12 Books or more - Odd Thomas' Stalker

If all this talk about Odd Thomas confuses you, I suggest you start the challenge by reading the respective novel!

To sign up, please read the general rules below! Then post about the challenge on your blog, including the button above, and don't forget to link back to the Dean Koontz Reading Challenge page on my blog!

*****

RULES

Anyone may join. Just leave a comment below with the following info:
Name / Blog (if you have one) / Chosen Level

I'll comprise a list with everyone and add it to this page!

Updates on the challenges will be posted on a regular basis and you may then comment with your own progress.

The challenge will take place between January 1st and December 31st 2012.

You can join any time between now and early 2012.

You have to pick a level, though you may "upgrade" to the next one at any time. In this case just drop me a line, so I can change your previous level.

You don't need to list your books ahead of time, though I won't object if you do. I'm definitely curious about your book choices for these challenges.

The books you choose may crossover into other challenges.

Both physical and eBooks are allowed.

Reviews of the books read are not mandatory.

2012 Tea & Books Reading Challenge

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

This challenge was inspired by C.S. Lewis' famous words, "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me."

You better settle in with a large cup of tea, because in this challenge you will only get to read ... wait for it ... books with more than 700 pages. I'm deadly serious. We all have a few of those tomes on our shelves and somehow the amount of pages often prevents us from finally picking them up. You may choose novels only, no short story collections or anthologies, and in case you're trying a short cut by picking large print editions of a book, well I'm sorry, those do not qualify for this challenge! Let's battle those tomes that have been collecting dust on our shelves, so no re-reads, please!

2 Books - Chamomile Lover

4 Books - Berry Tea Devotee

6 Books - Earl Grey Aficionado (this will be the one I'll try)

8 or more Books - Sencha Connoisseur

To sign up, please read the general rules below! Then post about the challenge on your blog, including the button above, and don't forget to link back to the Tea & Books Reading Challenge page on my blog!

2012 Just Contemporary Reading Challenge

button1

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

Rules/Guidelines/Important Info:

This is a challenge to get people reading moreContemporary/Realistic Fiction.

There are two possible ways to participate:

The first is simple- Read Contemporary YA. Every single Contemporary counts. Challenge yourself to read moreContemporary YA than normal. If you never read it, add a few next year. If you are new to it, try for one a month. Or two a month. Or even more!

The second is the same basic idea (read more) but it adds variety to what you pick. Instead of reading any Contemporary, this gets you to mix-it up. There are so many sub-genres within Contemporary that I want to encourage people to try more of them. This is a good place for those who already read a lot of Contemporary.

If you want to participate in option 2, you can make it as strict or asflexible as you'd like. If you only read YA Romantic Comedies, reading one book about grief or even a romantic drama can qualify you for the second group. Reading to me is very personal, and Contemporary more so, IMO, than any other genre, so I'm letting that carry over into how you set your goals for this challenge.

There will be monthly updates and mini-challenges and giveaways going up around the first of each month. Each month will be something different and (hopefully) fun. Participation in mini-challenges is optional. Some of the monthly challenges and 'games' will be the same between challenge group 1 & 2 and other months they will be different.

Books must be read between January 1, 2012 and December 31st 2012.

Any Contemporary YA book will count toward this challengeregardless of publication date.

There will be a weekly link up for reviews. Reviews are not mandatory, but are strongly encouraged (spread the word!!) and extra entries into all relevant giveaways will be given for each review.

Reviews can be posted to a blog, goodreads or, for those who don't use either, guest review options will be available as well.

Extra entries for giveaways during any future Contemporary Event will also be awarded to participants of the challenge.

2012 Northern Africa Reading Challenge

'africa-globe' photo (c) 2007, openDemocracy - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012

I’ve been interested for a while in reading books about Africa. If you look at the top of this page you will see a link to my pages of Books about Africa, sorted by region and then by country. So I decided to get organized in 2012 and sponsor a challenge for myself and anyone else who wants to join in.

I (we) will be concentrating on Northern Africa this year. It’s a good place to start because I think we could all afford to know a little more about this part of the world from which so much of our heritage comes and in which so much has been happening lately. In my template, there are eleven countries in Northern Africa: Algeria, Chad, Egypt, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Sudan, Tunisia, and Western Sahara. The challenge is to read eleven books either set in this region or written by authors from this region in 2012. I hope to read read at least one adult book and one children’s book from each country. The children’s books may be more difficult to find.

You are welcome to try any one of the following challenges—or make up your own.

1. North Africa Tour: Read at least one book from each of the eleven countries in Northern Africa. Since the challenge runs for eleven months, this challenge would entail reading one book per month.

2. African Country Concentration: Read five books set in one of the countries of Northern Africa or five books by authors from one of the countries of Northern Africa. Example: Read five books by Egyptian authors.

3. Children’s Challenge: Read five to eleven children’s books set in Northern Africa. Adults are welcome to do this challenge either with a child or not.

The Northern Africa Challenge begins on January 1, 2012 and ends on December 1, 2012. If you choose to read eleven books for this challenge, that will be one book per month. If you would like to join me in this challenge in 2012, please leave a comment. I will keep a list of challenge participants in a separate post, and I will link to your reviews, if you write them and send me links, on my Africa pages. (If you already have book reviews on your blog related to Northern Africa, those books don’t count for the challenge. However, if you send me the links at sherryDOTearlyAtgmailDOTcom, I will add your reviews to my Northern Africa page.) If anyone knows how to make nifty graphics/buttons and wants to make one for this challenge, I will be appreciative. I am graphically and artistically challenged. (Get it? Challenged? Ho, ho!) There may or may not be prizes for those who complete the challenge: I’m looking at some books related to Africa to give as prizes.

I will also be praying for the people and countries of North Africa as I read about them, and you’re welcome to join me in that endeavor, too.

MEME: NetGalley Recommendations

Weekly Meme

I've noticed that many of my readers are themselves bloggers and/or reviewers and as I recently discovered what I'd been missing out on over at netGalley, I took the bait and decided to test out a weekly meme (that I will actually post every week!!)

It'll be called Weekly NetGalley Recommendations (very original, I know) will be posted on Sunday, and the number of recommendations per week will vary. It will have the title, cover, it's GoodReads synopsis, and the link to request it on netGalley. Beware: I do have a partiality for YA.

2012 Sci-Fi Reader Challenge

scifichallenge

January 1,2012 – December 31,2012

Despite all the ones already out there, I couldn't find the perfect one I was really looking for - something that challenged me to read more science fiction and a wider range of science fiction titles - so I decided to create a science fiction challenge just for me.  But wouldn't it be more fun with other people taking part?  Of course it would, which is why I present to you Working for the Mandroid's 2012 Science Fiction Reader Challenge. (trademark pending)
Here are the basic rules:
1. The challenge begins January 1, 2012 and runs through December 31, 2012.  Books started before January 1 don't count towards the challenge.  Re-reads do count, but a new review must be written.  Any format of book counts - hard copy, audiobook, e-book - we're not picky.
2. A review has to be written and posted for each book in the challenge.  If you don't have a blog, they can be posted on Goodreads, LibraryThing, Amazon, Shelfari, Facebook, anywhere else book reviews are accepted and can be linked to.
3. Any books read for another challenge that fit into a category here can count towards this one.  One book, however, cannot fill multiple categories in this challenge.  For example, Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game technically fits into at least four of the categories.  It can only count for one though.
4. A post will be set up on Working for the Mandroid beginning January 1 for participants to add their review links.  I personally will put up a post at the end of each month to track my own progress.  That's where you can comment, brag and/or complain about how impossible it is to get through Dune.*
5. At the end of the year, I will put all the people who signed up for the challenge and finished 6 of the 12 categories in a contest for a not yet determined prize.  Those who finish all 12 of the categories will be entered into a different, better contest.  Additional contests throughout the year might also become available depending on participation of readers and availability of prizes.  Note: The more participants, the more likely I can get some science fiction friendly sponsors, the more contests.
There are twelve categories to this challenge, so essentially a book for each month.  Some of these will be easier to fill for certain readers, while others might be more difficult.
YA/MG Science Fiction title
This can be anything remotely science fiction written for a younger audience.
Adult Science Fiction title
See above, but this time with an adult title.
Hugo Winner
Any book that's won a Hugo Award - see the list here
Some of these are clearly fantasy books, but for this category, that's okay.
Science Fiction Classic - Pre-1950s
This is a really brilliant website listing science fiction classics.  This category would include things like Frankenstein, 1984, anything by HG Wells or Jules Vern, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you know, classics.  Put your high school English caps on!
Science Fiction Modern Classic - 1951-1992
See the previously mentioned really brilliant website
Steampunk
Any book that could be classified as steampunk - a sub-genre of science fiction that denotes fictional works set in an era or world where steam is the primarily use of power.  It often takes place in an alternate form of the Victorian era and features futuristic technology twisted to fit in a historical setting.  Steampunk has spread to a lot of other genres, so for example if you like more chick lit leaning books, The Parasol Protectorate might be your style.  If you like more adult reads, there's The Baroque Cycle by Neal Steaphenson.  There are a ton of YA steampunk out these days.  I'll even count this one if you choose to read it despite my own personal feelings of its steampunk-ness.  Here's a good list of titles.
Robots/Cyborgs/Androids
Easy enough - books that predominantly feature robots, such as, I don't know, Robopocalypse or I, Robot or even perhaps Cinder. Here's a list.
Spaceships/Aliens
Any book that heavily involves either spaceships or aliens.  Though I haven't read it, I've been told that Across the Universe by Beth Revis takes place on spaceships, so it would count.  I Am Number Four is about aliens, so that would count too.  Starship Troopers has spaceships and aliens.  I highly recommend The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell (aliens).  I read it in high school and thinking about it still freaks me out a little.  Here's a list.
Time Travel/Alternate History/Parallel Universe
The most obvious choice is, of course, The Time Traveler's Wife, which would count.  There's also the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon and The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde has a time traveling side plot important to the story.  Here's a list of time travel books.
Alternate history is a little different.  It could be as different as steampunk or as simple as the resulting history caused by the Nazis winning WWII.  My favorite is probably Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, which ties magic into the Napoleonic Wars.  It's a doorstopper at 1024 pages and technically fantasy, but it's really good.  Here's a list of suggestions.
Parallel universe are two stories occurring simultaneously across two different universes.  For example, The Eyre Affair has the real world as well as Thursday Next's adventures in the book world.  Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series takes place in a number of parallel worlds, if I remember correctly.  And there's always The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.  Additional examples can be found here.
Apocalyptic/Dystopia/Utopia
Pick up a book published in the last year.  It's probably a dystopia book.  They seem to be coming out by the bucket full.  Classics include Brave New World and 1984, YA titles include Divergent, The Hunger Games, Matched,Wither, Ashes, the list goes on and on.  I'd even say that any zombie titles would fit into this category too.  Zombies = Apocalypse
I highly recommend The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood.  List of books: apocalyptic, utopia, and dystopia.
Cyberpunk
This is a bit subgenre of a subgenre.  Cyberpunk was started in the 1980s and involves stories that tend to be about grungy societies that happen to be inundated with very high tech.  It often involves some sort of crazy computer-based alternate reality and/or androids.  William Gibson (Neuromancer, Pattern Recognition, Count Zero, pretty much everything he's ever written) and Neal Stephenson (Snow Crash, The Diamond Age) are your guys here.  Here's a list of additional choices.
Mad Scientists/Genetic Testing/Environmental Disaster
I haven't seen a lot of mad scientist books released recently, but they are out there.  The three most obvious titles, I think, would be Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, The Island of Doctor Moreau and Frankenstein.  To broaden the spectrum, I will also count anything involving genetic testing and altering nature, so The Postmortal would count as would Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake.  The webcomic Girl Genius falls under this category and has been collected in book form and The Umbrella Academy graphic novels also include some scientific shenanigans.  Your standard superhero comics usually fit too.   Superman, Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Batman, Iron Man - all have mad scientists somewhere.  Here's a starter list that I'll keep adding to as I come across additional mad scientist titles.

Non-Fiction Non-Memoir Reading Challenge

Non-FictionNon-Memoir

January 1, 2012 – December 31,2012

I've decided to host a challenge to motivate myself and others to read more nonfiction. To make it more of a challenge, the Non-Fiction Non-Memoir Reading Challenge will exclude memoirs, which seem to be the most read type of nonfiction among the book blogs I follow. Instead, we'll focus on learning about a variety of different topics and discovering new facts. The challenge will run from January 1, 2012 through December 31, 2012.

What Counts:
- Books can be any format (bound, ebook, audio) but must be written for adults or young adults.
- Books can cover many different topics, including science, technology, religion, sociology, business, biography, politics, economics, history, food, art/design, etc.
- How-to, self-help and travel books are permitted, as long as you actual read them cover to cover, and don't just use them as a reference.
- Crossovers with other challenges are permitted.

What Does Not Count:
- Reference books, cookbooks and instruction manuals that are not meant to be read cover to cover
- Essays and articles
- How-to, self-help or travel books that are not read cover to cover
- Memoirs, journals and autobiographies
- Books written for children
- Re-reads don't count since the point is to learn something new

Levels:
Elementary - 5 nonfiction books
Diploma - 10 nonfiction books
Bachelor's Degree - 15 nonfiction books
Master's Degree -  25 nonfiction books
Details:
- Write a starting post that states which level you will be working toward, including a link back to this post. You can include a list of books, but it is not required. Link to your post in the Linky below.
- If you don't have a blog, leave your information in the comments on this post.
- Reviews are not required, but I will have a post set up where you can link up to your reviews throughout the year.
- There will be quarterly update posts to which you can link up, and at least one giveaway at the end of the year. I may host others throughout the year as well. [Note to authors: I'll gladly accept your nonfiction books as giveaways.]
- A wrap-up post at the end of the year will be required to be considered for the final giveaway. If you don't have a blog, you'll need to comment on the wrap-up post with your accomplishments.
- You can sign up for this challenge through November 30, 2012.
This is my first time hosting a year-long challenge so please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions! And here's a button to grab for your sidebar:

War Through the Generation’s 2012 reading challenge will be World War I. The challenge will run from January 1, 2012, through December 31, 2012.

Rules:
This year you have options when reading your fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, etc. with the WWI as the primary or secondary theme.
Books can take place before, during, or after the war, so long as the conflicts that led to the war or the war itself are important to the story. Books from other challenges count so long as they meet the above criteria.

Wade: Read 4-10 books in any genre with WWI as a primary or secondary theme.
Swim: Read 11 or more books in any genre with WWI as a primary or secondary theme.

Additionally, we’ve decided that since there are so many great movies out there about WWI, you can substitute or add a movie or two to your list this year and have it count toward your totals.

**Note**
*Participants anywhere in the world are eligible for most prizes in the post-challenge drawing!**
*Prize drawings will be for participants finishing the minimum 1-3 books.
*Participants can always read more than their initial goals, and even if you sign up for 11+, but read just 1-3 books, and you’ve officially completed the challenge and are eligible for prizes.
You can decide which books you’d like to read right away, or you can choose them during the course of the challenge. Check out theRecommended Reading: WWI page for suggestions.

***Attention Participants***
We wanted to try something a little different this year, and we thought that it would be fun to do a group review here on War Through the Generations midway through the challenge.
The 2012 book for the read-a-long will be A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.

How to sign up:
Leave a comment on this page with your reading goal. Please spread the word about the challenge on your blogs. Feel free to do a sign up post and leave a link to your post here.
Everyone who signs up will be listed on the WWI Reading Challenge Participants page.

2012 Sci-Fi Challenge

scifi04

January 1st, 2012 – December 31st, 2012

Want to challenge yourself to read outside your comfort zone in 2012?
Like science fiction but tend to put off reading it?
Are you a total geek but never really take the time to read?
If you answered yes to any of the above, sign up for my 2012 reading challenge now! The idea is to read one sci-fi book each month however we all have different reading speeds so set yourself a number that you feel comfortable with.

What books count as sci-fi?
There's more to science fiction than aliens and spaceships. The dictionary definition is: fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component. So that includes dystopias, zombie viruses, genetic engineering gone awry, time travel, steampunk, extreme weather, space exploration and, of course, aliens.
Not a book blogger?
That's OK. As long as you are willing to write some words about the book on a publicly accessible site (eg. Goodreads, personal blog) you can join in. If you're not sure where you'll be posting you can sign up with a social network account.
Monthly giveaways!
Yes, each book you read will get you an entry into some great giveaways throughout the year.
Don't know where to start?
I'll be choosing a featured book each month as an optional readalong. If you'd like to treat it as a book group, we can arrange discussions too.
Add yourself to the Mr Linky list to sign up. New link-ups will be posted at the end of each month for you to share the books you've read
