Adoption Reading Challenge 2012

January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012

Last year’s Adoption Reading Challenge was a success. I don’t care if you didn’t read all of your books and feel that you failed; it was still a success. People who aren’t touched by adoption read books they never would have read. People who are touched by adoption read books they never would have read. We expanded our knowledge, ranted a little bit and had a lot of fun. With books. That? Is a success, my friends.

As such, I’m hosting the Adoption Reading Challenge again in 2012. The landing page to share your links is already live. I kept the reading levels and number of challenge books the same this year. I actually fell short of the 20 myself (by 3!), but I don’t think 20 books is too outrageous. Here’s the challenge levels:
Level 1: Read 3 books about adoption, non-fiction or fiction.
Level 2: Read 6 books about adoption, 3 non-fiction/3 fiction.
Level 3: Read 12 books about adoption, 6 non-fiction/6 fiction.
Level 4: Read 20 books about adoption, 10 non-fiction/10 fiction.
That’s a lot of reading if you choose Level 4, but it was really interesting for me. I had to go out and beyond what my experience is (open, domestic adoption) and into other realms I hadn’t before (international adoption, adoptee rights, and so on). The rules, on the official page, are also the same as last year, with this addition that explains why people not touched by adoption might want to join this challenge.
Adoption is a huge theme in books (and movies/TV). Reading it with that in mind, to look at how it is treated in both fiction and non-fiction is a great way to become mindful of something that might be outside of your immediate experience.
The truth is that adoption is mentioned in all sorts of popular books (think Twilight to Jodi Picoult to even the books our children read). Recognizing it when you read it, talking about it and understanding why some depictions of adoption are detrimental to social change is not a bad idea whether you’re touched by adoption or not.

That said, I hope you will participate again in the Adoption Reading Challenge. You can sign up below and leave your links for reviews on the main landing page. Doing so helps others figure out what to read as they go. (Or, you know, what not to read if it’s a truly horrid book.)

1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die Challenge

January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012

This challenge was such a success last year (well, for a lot of people, I only read two…but still success!) that i am running it again and it will be new and improved!

Here is a run down of the origins of the challenge:

I got this book for Christmas a couple years ago and am slowly making my way through the list. I have discovered some amazing books and writers. I don’t expect to ever read all of the books – but I do want to make a dent in the list and want to open it up for other to join me! The list is so great because it has a huge variety! There are classics that you may have read in school, but there are also some great books we have all missed and some fantastic world literature.

The challenge is simple – read some books from the list! If you don’t own the actual book, you can find a simple list online. For the most basic, check out the Listology list. There are spreadsheets outs there that you can look at too that are more complex.

Sine this year is an Olympics year, I thought the structure would change…so here are the levels this year!

Levels:
Got to trials:  5 books from the list
Made the Olympic team: 6-10 books from the list
Bronze medal: 11-15 books from the list
Silver Medal: 16-20  books from the list:
Gold Medal: 21+ books from the list

Rules:

Challenge runs January 1 2012 – December 31 2012.

You don’t have to make a list beforehand.

You DO need to choose your level at the beginning so you have a chance to win the prize!

You can use any version of the list, not just the current, since they update it every couple years.

I figure, once a book is on the list, it is always on the list!

Books that cover other challenges are not only permitted, but encouraged!

Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon

image
January 23 through January 29, 2012

The Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon is just a bit over a month away on January 23 through January 29! It will start at 12:00am Monday and end at 11:59pm on Sunday.  Times are central standard time so adjust your times accordingly.  I plan to host a mini-challenge (or two or more) and there will be a giveaway for every one who signs in at the starting line and completes a wrap up post at the end.  Of course, like most read-a-thons, the books read must be novels or novellas, adult or young adult are fine, but no children's books.  You DO NOT have to participate the entire week.  Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule.  As long as you sign in at the sign-in post and do some kind of wrap up post, you're in for the giveaway.  As with my previous read-a-thons, it will be a week of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.  I hope you will join me!
You do not have to have a blog to participate. You can sign-up, sign-in, and wrap-up...all from Facebook, Twitter, or Goodreads. You can also do updates from those locations, if you do not have a blog. Also, to chat or update during the read-a-thon on Twitter, use hashtag #WintersRespite.

You do not have to do a post right now, unless you want to help get the word out.  Just post a link to your blog (or to your post, if you decide to do one) in the Mr. Linky below.
I'm putting the call out to anyone who would like to host a mini-challenge and/or giveaway.  Authors, if you would like to sponsor a giveaway or donate a prize, please let me know.  You can contact me at truebookaddictATgmailDOTcom  Any and all help will be greatly appreciated!

The Romance Reading Challenge 2012

image
January 1st, 2012 through December 31st, 2012
Can I get a *woot* *woot*? I started the Romance Reading Challenge back in 2008 and I really enjoy hosting it. Now that a new year is soon upon us, The Romance Reading Challenge 2012 will begin again. Nostalgia is sweet...click here if you want to see the first RRC post.
Without further ado, here are the rules:
  1. The challenge runs from January 1st, 2012 through December 31st, 2012.
  2. "Romance" isn't limited to steamy Harlequin novels. There is a huge selection of books in this category such as contemporary romance, historical romance, romantic suspense and paranormal romance to name a few. As long as the story has romantic love between the two main characters your selection will fit this challenge. The novels do not need to have a happy ending either, there can also be unrequited love.
  3. Choose at least 5 novels to read. You can change your choices at any time. Crossovers between other challenges are fine.
All kinds of books count such as eBooks, Audiobooks...etc.
If you are looking for suggested reading see Best Romance Novels Today, Romance Novels on Wiki or Best Romance Stories.
In my opinion, you can't go wrong with Jane Austen, Nora Roberts, Nicholas Sparks and Georgette Heyer.
  4. Read the books at your own pace in 2012 then post the link to your review(s). You don't need to have a blog, posting your reviews on Goodreads and LibraryThing counts as well.
For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

The Dark Tower Reading Challenge

January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012

I read The Dark Tower Series years ago and it has to be one of my favorite series of all time.  I think that because I read some of the books so spaced out from the others, and the fact that I was so young when I read them, I feel like I missed a lot of things that were in the series.  Plus, there are things that I just plain don't remember anymore.  Also, there's a new book coming out in April to add to the series and I want to re-read the series before I delve into that one.
So, from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2012, I'm going to be hosting The Dark Tower Reading Challenge.  I'll be honest, this is more for myself than anything else, but its always fun to have other people participate and I think that this will be a great series to discuss.
The books in the series are:
  1. The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger (1982)
  2. The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three (1987)
  3. The Dark Tower III: The Waste Lands (1991)
  4. The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass (1997)
  5. The Dark Tower V: Wolves of the Calla (2003)
  6. The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah (2004)
  7. The Dark Tower VII: The Dark Tower (2004)
  8. The Dark Tower: The Wind Through the Keyhole (2012) - BONUS!

2012 Nordic Challenge

image
January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012
Many of you have requested a return of the Nordic Challenge and I am happy to oblige. However, there are some changes. There won't be a quarterly review round-up rather post your links at the end of this message and I will start a review database.
The only "rules" are these:

There is no need to make a list before hand. Any book by any author born in a Nordic country (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and/or Sweden) or a book set in a Nordic country. They can be from any genre. As long as you follow these parameters you have done the Nordic Challenge. By posting your review here you give me permission to include it in the Nordic Literature Review Database (you will of course get credit as a reviewer). Because of this the challenge is perpetual.
I am hoping do to a bit of a showcase in September when the annual Gothenburgh Book Fair features Nordic literature.
Please come join us here in the North!
For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

2012 Operation Deepen Faith

image

January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012

This challenge has multiple parts. (You wouldn't have to sign up for each part. But. Ideally participants would be interested in doing more than just one.)
  1. Deep and Wide; Goal: read multiple books of the bible in multiple translations.
For example that might mean reading four to six books of the Bible (OT or NT, whatever you prefer) in four to six different translations. The books wouldn't have to be long books. You might choose Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians, etc. Or you might choose  John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Revelation. Or Luke, Acts, Romans, Hebrews. You can choose a group of books that makes sense to you. Books that you want to explore further. You choose the books, you choose the translations. You choose the pace.
  2. Going Deep; Goal: STUDY one book of the Bible throughout the year. Read it in at least four translations. Read the notes in a study Bible. Read a commentary book about it. Read or listen to sermons on it. Read it as often as possible--whether that is once a week or once a month or even once a day. Get to know that one book well. Let God speak to you through it. You might even choose to take notes or journal as you read. Whatever you want to do.
For example, Annette studied Romans last year. She read Romans 10 Times in 10 Different Translations. You wouldn't have to commit to ten times. You do choose the number of times, and the number of translations.
  3. Meditate or Memorize. Note the OR! Not everyone is comfortable committing to memorize Scripture. (I'm one of them!) Goal: Choose about a verse a week--or a verse every other week--to reflect and meditate on. It might mean memorizing it. It might mean writing or journaling about it. (Or blogging about it if you like.) It might mean praying it. Or studying it. It's taking the reading of Scripture into something a little more--worship. These verses would not be chosen ahead of time. I'm not asking for a list. This is all about choosing-as-you-go, choosing as you read, let Scripture speak to you.
  4. Christian Nonfiction. Don't be afraid to give it a try. Read some theology. You choose the number of books to aim for. A beginner might not feel comfortable committing to more than two books. And that's fine. I want to challenge you to start somewhere. This challenge is for everyone. Not just for people who want to commit to reading twenty! It isn't about reading the most. It isn't about reading fast.
    1. books about God (his attributes, his character, his names, etc.)
    2. books about the birth, life, death, resurrection of Jesus
    3. books about the Bible
    4. books about Bible characters (Moses, David, Solomon, Abraham, Jesus, Peter, etc.)
    5. books about prayer, fasting
    6. books about worship or worship music
    7. books about church life or church growth or church leadership
    8. books about missions
    9. sermon collections (sermon note collections), essay collections
    10. biographies/memoirs of theologians, preachers, missionaries, etc.
    11. books about pain, suffering, tough questions, etc.
    12. books about apologetics
    13. books about evangelism
    14. books about end times
Sign up by leaving a comment. Be sure to let me know which of the four you're interested in joining. You don't have to commit to specifics. (You don't have to tell me which one book you're going to study. Or how many books/how many translations you're going to read. Or the number of theology books you're wanting to commit to.) Though if you have decided, then feel free to share! But you don't have to have it all exactly planned out in order to join!
You should also know that I am planning to host a special event in April 2012. I'll be hosting the 'read-the-new-testament-in-a-week' challenge or event. April 1 through April 8th. (Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday.) If you are interested in participating, let me know. And I'll try to keep you updated with details if you leave a blog address or email address. Of course, I'll be sharing those details on my blog as well.
For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

I think I've gone reading challenge crazy, but I'm hosting yet another reading challenge. This is for the Rizzoli and Isles series by Tess Gerritsen. I've read other books by Tess Gerritsen but none of the R&I series. I love the TV series and I've been wanting to start reading the books. 2) THE APPRENTICE (2002)
3) THE SINNER (2003)
4) BODY DOUBLE (2004)

6) THE MEPHISTO CLUB (2005)
7) THE KEEPSAKE (UK title: KEEPING THE DEAD) (2008)
8) ICE COLD (UK title: THE KILLING PLACE) (2010)
9) THE SILENT GIRL (July 2011)

If you'd like to join me, here are the guidelines.
1) Grab the button on top and put it on your blog and link to this challenge.
2) Sign up with the link below. Please make sure the url you use goes directly to your blog post about this challenge.
3) If you don't have a blog, that's okay. Just comment below that you want to join. Then come back to let us know which books you've read. Or you can post them on other sites such as Goodreads or Shelfari. For those with a blog and posting reviews, I will have a link for completed reviews.
4) Make a list of which books in the series you still have to read. Whether you are just beginning or up to #2, 3, 4, etc...that's how many books you have to read.
5) Books can be in any format (print, ebook, audio) and you can crossover to other challenges.

What Would Jane Do Reading Challenge

January 1,2012 – December 31,2012

My sister and I were looking at reading challenges and had a few challenges that we still wanted to find. One of them was a steampunk challenge that I have already posted, but that is not the challenge that I am talking about. This new challenge is one that is perfect for all of the lovers of Jane Austen's literature or people who want to be.

I've been reading Austen for a long time and truly love her work, but I have not read them in a while.

The challenge will run from January 1st-December 31st 2012.

The books you read count for other challenges.
You can count ebooks in addition to regular ones.

Just Austen-
Books only written by Jane Austen

A Touch of Pride: Read 1-3 books

Learning Sense: Read 4+  books

Jane Austen and Beyond-
Books written by Jane and books that include variation of one of her works, sequels and/or books that use her as a fictional character.

Expanding Emmagination: Read 1-3 books by Jane Austen and 1-3 books that fall into one or all of the other categories.

Jane's Persuasion: Read 4+ books by Jane Austen and 4+ books from the other categories.

Clocks, Cogs and Mechanisms Reading Challenge 2012

300px-Kyle-cassidy-steampunk

January 1,2012 – December 31,2012

The title of this challenge is pretty self-explanatory unless you don't know what steampunk is. Steampunk in case you did not know is an up and coming genre of fiction that takes place in older time periods, typically Victorian and involves lots of steam-powered technology. If you want some more information about steampunk follow the link for more information:Steampunk

This challenge runs from January 1st-December 31st.
What do I let count as steampunk?
You can count books like "The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells and other books that are considered precursors to steampunk, I have no problem with you counting graphic novels like Full Metal Alchemist.
They do not have to be on a paper to count, your ebooks count as well.
You can also count these books towards other challenges.
Brass Gears: Read 1-3 steampunk books
Flight goggles: 4-6 books
Button-up boots: 7-12 books
Clockwork Corset: 13+ books

Agatha Christie Reading Challenge

agatha_christie_rc

January 1,2012 – December 31,2012

The Agatha Christie Reading Challenge is really a challenge in two parts.

Part One
My original idea with the challenge was that I would read the books of Agatha Christie in order of publication to see what I could learn about her development as a writer, her exploration of the genre, development of her main characters and so on.
I've continued to tackle that on two fronts: her novels and her short stories.
I invited other people to join me and some are attempting to read the novels in order as I am, while others are simply reading them as they come across them.
I invite you to join us on this reading journey, reading at your own pace, either in publication order, or not, as you please.
You can join by adding your name to the Mr Linky at the foot of this post.
I find that I am reading about a title a month, aiming for 12 a year.
As I read a new book, I write a review and post it on my blog.
I also write an update post, recording my progress so far.
If you click here, you will see examples of these posts.

Part Two
The second part of the challenge is to be a participant in the monthly Agatha Christie Challenge Blog Carnival which is published 22-23 of each month.
It is an opportunity to submit your Agatha Christie reviews and updates to each carnival.
So when you write a review or an update about your progress in the challenge, then the next step each time is to submit your post to the Carnival here.
The carnival has various categories:
  • General
  • Miss Marple
  • Tommy & Tuppence
  • Hercule Poirot
  • Superintendent Battle
  • Short Stories
  • Updates
  • Discoveries (here you can submit interesting Agatha Christie related websites that you've discovered)

CUPCAKES WAR READING CHALLENGE 2012

image
January 1, 2012 – December 31, 2012
(Come Up and Participate in the Challenge And Keep Earning Sweets  While Actively Reading!)
I thought that since the Cupcakes War is so much fun to watch on television. It amazes me what great creative cupcakes the bakers make.  I thought why not host a Cupcakes War Challenge while reading books.  Since I love books and I think cupcakes are cute and yummy, why not just combine the two!  So here it is.......
WHEN:    Throughout the months of 2012 –    Starting in January.
WHY:      Just for the fun of setting a different reading goal each month.
WHAT:     Reading a different reading genre each month and meeting goal.
WHERE:   Online
WHO:       Anyone that likes to challenge themselves to read by setting a goal.
HOW:       Signing up on Mr. Linky to participate in the Cupcakes War Challenge.
Each month will have a designated genre to read. Sometimes it is easy to get in a rut and read the same kind of books.  This challenge will help you to choose different genres!  I hope that you decide to join the Challenge!
SCHEDULE:
  1. JANUARY:           JUVENILE FICTION
  2. FEBRUARY:         ROMANCE FICTION
  3. MARCH:              MYSTERIES
  4. APRIL:                ADULT FICTION
  5. MAY:                  MEMOIRS
  6. JUNE:                 JUST CHICK LIT
  7. JULY:                  JUST NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST BOOKS
  8. AUGUST:            AUTOBIOGRAPHIES
  9. SEPTEMBER:      SOUTHERN FICTION
  10. OCTOBER:         OWN CHOICE
  11. NOVEMBER:       NOTHING BUT INSPIRATIONAL
  12. DECEMBER:       DEBUT AUTHORS
I would imagine that everyone that participates could set a goal of at least two (2) books in the designated genre for the month.  At the end of the month, I will display a different cupcake that you can add to your site.  If you successfully accomplish the goal each month, you will end with a dozen cupcakes on your site!  I hope that you decide to join in the fun with this fun challenge!!!

We want you to read French authors!

image
September 09, 2011 – August 08, 2012

As French girls, we wanted to do a little something to promote French literature to English speaking people. Then came the idea of this challenge. The goal is for you to read as many French books (in English, but if you want to try reading in French, be our guest) as you want.
I've made a non exhaustive list of French books that I know have been translated in English, feel free to choose other books too if you find some. I'll add them on the list.
This list will be on the challenge page so that you can access it easily without searching (you'll find the page at the top of the blog, just above the articles).
From the 1st of September, you'll can enter the links pointing to your reviews of French books read for the challenge in the Mr Linky box right here. Once a month, I'll check them and will make a clear list of what each of you have read so far.
You'll have 1 year to read as many books as you chose to. Here are the different levels you can try to reach:
Antoine de St Exupéry level (1 book)
Alexandre Dumas level (3 books)
Albert Camus level (5 books)
Jules Verne level (10 books)
Victor Hugo level (More than 20 books)
To answer some of your questions:
* You can only read novels (let's say more than 80 pages at least) and plays.
* You can choose ebooks, paper or audio books.
* Only books read between September 1st, 2011 and August 31st, 2012 count (but if you want to reread a book you've read before this challenge, you can).
* You can join and change your level of participation at any time, and you don't have to list in advance the book(s) you'll read.
* Crossovers with other challenges are allowed.
* You can register starting today, just leave a comment on this post to let us know you're in.
Voilà! See you on September the 1st!

Literature and War Readalong 2012

image
DATE range

People have been announcing their challenges and events for 2012 for a while now so it was about time to let you see the list for next year’s Literature and War Readalong.
It was not easy to compile this list as the books needed to fulfill different criteria one of which was length. I didn’t want to include too many books over 300 pages. The only novel over 500 pages will make up for its length by being very readable.
The other criterion was the country. Like last year, I wanted to include books from as many different countries as possible. I know it looks as if there were more British books than anything else which is true, still I managed to include books from 8 different countries.
I will also join Anna and Selena for the War Through the Generations Challenge that is dedicated to WWI this year. My introductory post is due later this week. The first three novels in the readalong will also count for their challenge.
I have been asked whether it is possible to join but read something different. Since strictly speaking a readalong implies that people read and discuss the same book, it’s difficult but as I’m starting a Literature and War Project I thought of a good solution that will serve anyone who wants to join –  myself as well as I may be in the mood to read more than one novel focusing on war. The idea would be that anyone can join during the last week of the month and either participate in the readalong or review any other war themed book that will then be added to the project page. The objective of the page is to cover many different countries, wars, themes and even genres. For the War Through the Generations Challenge I will for example read a children’s book and maybe a crime novel set in the trenches. Next year I would also like to read a Sci-Fi novel like Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War that has been suggested by Max from Pechorin’s Journal. And finally I would like to read more non-fiction.
This year’s readalong will not always take place on Fridays but alternate between Monday and Friday depending on whether the Friday is during the last week of the month or not.

For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”: January Sign-up Post

image
January 2012

How the sign-up works.

  • I won’t be having any of those link-up gadgets. Instead, just state your interest in the comments section of this post.
  • If you are a blogger and you get ready a sign-up post, please add your link to the comments section.
  • If you are not a blogger, don’t worry. Just state your interest ‘s all.
I’m looking at making a master list of participants along with links from bloggers on each play’s sign-up post — just so that all this info isn’t lost among all the discussions and comments.
How the read-along schedule works. You are welcome to begin reading the play any time you like. However, on this blog, the read-along posts that follow each act in the play will be found on the following dates:
  • 15 January 2012 — Act I
  • 18 January 2012 — Act II
  • 21 January 2012 — Act III
  • 24 January 2012 — Act IV
  • 27 January 2012 — Act V
  • 30 January 2012 — Summary of Discussions/Wrap-up Post
How the discussion works. The first five discussion posts will contain brief summaries of the corresponding act followed by questions to provoke discussion. The sixth and final post will be a summary of the discussions we’ve had in the previous posts, mapping out various subjects like characterisation, themes, symbols and motifs — anything that comes up during the course of the discussions.
Remember:
  • If you are a blogger and would like to make separate posts on your blogs answering the discussion questions, please add your links to the corresponding posts in the comments section.
  • You do not have to be a blogger to participate in the discussions.
  • Even if you are not able to finish reading the play within the assigned month, you are welcome to join in on the discussions at any time. There is NO time limit for discussions.
Now that we are done with the instructions, let’s get out our copies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and get ready for a surreal world of love and adventure!
For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

Third Sentence Thursday Meme

Weekly Meme

I heard from Sniffly last week, and she said she won’t be continuing Third Sentence Thursday and that I could host it if I’d like. And because I really enjoy it, I have decided to take it. So, from here on out – or at least until further notice – Third Sentence Thursday is now hosted by Proud Book Nerd. I have a new button to reflect the change. As always, it’s in the sidebar (with the code). Please grab it if you’re playing along. Also, I’m planning to have a linky every week, so that should make playing along a little easier, right?

PLEASE play along. And PLEASE spread the word! This is a fun meme to do, but only if I’m not alone. The more the merrier!

Rules:
Third Sentence Thursday is a weekly meme that loves the number 3.
  1. Take the book you are currently reading and post the third sentence.
  2. Share your thoughts on the sentence.
  3. Post a link to your blog post in the link list below. Don’t forget to link back here, too! If you don’t have a blog, just leave it in the comments here.
  4. Visit one or two of the other blogs to check out their third sentence.

    Fairy Tales Retold Challenge

    January 1 - December 31, 2012

It goes from January 1st 2012 to December 31st 2012
To sign up, use the form at the end of this post!
You can sign up any time from now until June-ish
I would love you forever if you would follow me, and if you're interested in fairy tales, then you'd probably find my blog interesting anyway!

    What Counts
Any retelling at all, or original fairy tales. When I say original fairy tales, I mean books that include many elements of many fairy tales, but aren't actually based on any fairy tales. Some examples are The Princess Bride by William Goldman or Princess Academy by Shannon Hale (BEST BOOK EVER!) Basically a book that should have a fairy tale based on it, but it's too late for it to be the other way around.

    Participating
All you need is a desire to read fairy tales, and preferably a way to post reviews. Whether it be a blog, Goodreads, or Amazon, it doesn't matter.

    Levels
    3 books - Peasant
    6 books - Fairy
    9 Books - Witch
    12 books - Princess
    15 books - Dragon
I'm going for Dragon level, and I'll probably end up reading way more than 15 anyway.

    Posting Reviews
At the end of each month I'll have a link-up post for any reviews you've done that month. No one is required to post reviews, I just want to see what you think!

For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

For the second year, I am proud to host the Immigrant Stories Challenge. As I said in the post announcing the inaugural Immigrant Stories Challenge last year, I am the child of immigrants and have always been drawn to immigrant stories in my reading. As I started to pay attention to the theme, I realized it is actually very prevalent in literature. Across many genres, books features immigrants from and to many nations in addition to the stories of their children as they try to fit in.

        The Challenge

The only requirement of the challenge is that the books read for it include an immigrant story. The immigrants can be coming to or from any country - expand your horizons!

How Many Books Do I Need to Read?

There are three levels for the challenge:

Just off the boat: 1-3 books
This land is my land?: 4-6 books
        Fully assimilated: 6+ books

What types of books are eligible? Only fiction? How about audiobooks?
All types of books are eligible - fiction, non-fiction, short stories, audiobooks, e-books.

        Other details?
Re-reads are acceptable as are cross-overs with other challenges. Last year, I tried to post a monthly feature that covered a topic relevant to immigration (and often books) - guest posts from authors of books featuring an immigrant story and or who were immigrants themselves (Kate KerriganAine Greaney, and Pamela Schoenewaldt). I will be doing the same this year and hope to be a bit more consistent with it than last year! If you are an author of a book with an immigrant theme or are interested in posting about the immigrant experience, please contact me

Any book suggestions? You can find recommendations for books that cover the immigrant experience here - this is in no way comprehensive but will give you a start. I will keep the link updated with titles suggested by all the participants. You can also check out the reviews posted by last year's participants - there are some great options here.

What are the dates for the challenge? January 1, 2012 - December 31, 2012. You can sign up anytime. If you  are "at capacity" for challenges this year (I know the feeling), I hope you will consider helping to spread the word about the challenge.
