The Moral of the Story Challenge (2013)

Moral of the Story

January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013

I love fairy tales and fables so why not make a challenge out of it? The purpose of this challenge is to see how many you (Aesop’s Fables, Canterbury Tales, Hans Christian Anderson, & Grimm Fairy Tales) can read and compare to each other? What are the morals to each short story?
Rules:
  • Short stories must come from Aesop (284), Anderson (64), or Grimm (120) books.
  • Books must be read from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013
  • Review between 2-4 stories that you’ve read at one time & link back to this review at the bottom of yours. (It does not have to be a full review, a sentence or two on Goodreads is more than sufficient.)
Levels:
  • 1 – 40 Morals Read
  • 41 – 80 Morals Learned
  • 81 – 100 Morals Understood
  • 100+ Morals Master

A Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon

January 21 – 27, 2013

It's here! The official sign up for A Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon! It's just a month away on January 21 - 27! It will start at 12:00am Monday and end at 11:59pm on Sunday.  Times are central standard time so adjust your times accordingly.  Of course, like most read-a-thons, the books read must be novels or novellas, adult or young adult are fine, and you can read children's books too (as long as you do read some novels too).  You DO NOT have to participate the entire week.  Join in when you can, start in the middle, end early...whatever works best for your schedule.  As long as you sign in at the sign-in post and do some kind of wrap up post, you're in for the big giveaway at the end.  As with my previous read-a-thons, it will be a week of relaxed reading during which we can personally challenge ourselves and whittle away those ever looming TBR piles/shelves/libraries.  I hope you will join me! I will not be hosting any mini-challenges, as we learned from my last two read-a-thons, focusing on the reading rocks. However, if anyone else would like to host a mini-challenge, you are more than welcome. We will have a few scheduled Twitter chats again (and perhaps some more reading sprints). Our twitter hashtag is#WintersRespite
Sign up in the linky below. You do not have to do a post now, unless you want to help spread the word (hint, hint...) If you don't have a blog, use Facebook, Twitter or Goodreads. Having a blog is not required. Be sure to grab the button at the top of this post. (Don't forget that this is just the sign-up linky. There will be starting line sign-in and wrap-up linkies during the read-a-thon and doing both is required to be eligible for the giveaway).

For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

150+ Reading Challenge for 2013

January 1st, 2013 thru December 31, 2013

For me 100 books is not a problem to read for one year.  I know there are a lot of people out there who can read more than the base line of 100.
So....this year I am not only challenging myself, I am going to challenge you to read even more this year!
The goal is to reach 150+ books for this challenge.  Now don't get discouraged!  I know 150 books or more sounds like a lot.  When you read the rules below though, you will find that it is quite easy to reach 150 books.
Don't be shy! Come sign up and spread the word!  The challenge doesn't officially start until January 1st, 2013.  Only books read on this date or after count towards the challenge.

DETAILS/RULES:

1. The goal is to read 150 or more books. Anyone can join. You don't need a blog to participate. Posting on GoodReads or wherever you post your reviews is good enough.
2. Allowed are: Audio, Re-reads, eBooks, YA, Manga, Graphic Novels, Library books, Novellas, Young Reader, Nonfiction – as long as the book has an ISBN or equivalent or can be purchased as such, the book counts.
What doesn't count: Individual short stories or individual books in the Bible and comic books.
3. No need to list your books in advance. You may select books as you go. Even if you list them now, you can change the list if needed.
4. Crossovers from other reading challenges count.
5. Challenge begins January 1st, 2013 thru December 31, 2013. Books started before the 1st do not count. You can join at anytime.
6. When you sign up under Linky, put the direct link to your post where your books will be listed. Include the URL to this post so that other viewers can find this fun challenge. If you’d prefer to put your list in the sidebar of your blog, please leave your viewers the link to the sign up page. Again, so viewers can join the challenge too.
READY......SET.....SIGN UP!!!!

The Erotic Literature Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013

Here are the details…
  • The challenge will run from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013
  • You can choose you level of commitment
First Base     -   1-3  books
Second Base -  4-7  books
Third Base    -  8-11 books
Let’s go all the way, baby! -12 and more
(Ok, maybe those level names are kind of lame but it’s late at night. If you have other suggestions,I’m all ears)
  • You can read short stories, novels, memoirs, or even audiobooks. Just as long as they all are considered erotica.
  • You don’t have to pre-select what you’re going to read or submit any list prior to joining in. Just jump in and read what you want throughout the year
  • When you’ve finished a book you can:
Write a review on your own blog and enter the link in Mr Linky below OR
Give a mini-review in the comment section here if you don’t have a blog
Depending on how things go throughout the year  (for me…not you all), I’d like to have a drawing periodically for an appropriately themed prize (sex toys, maybe?) . If that happens, it would be done in a drawing based on how many entries you have in the Mr Linky section or per review in the comments…so make sure you update with your reviews ! Even if  we don’t have a drawing, it’s still nice to read other’s reviews to get more ideas of books you can add to your To Read List, right?
I’ll make a button you can put on your own blog one of these days very soon, so check back to grab that.
Looking for some suggestions of what to read? Here’s some : Best Erotica for the Well-Read Woman (with more to be added. I also will probably add some as the challenge goes on based on positive reviews)
Ok. Now go find some hot books to read.

Read 2 Review are setting up our first Read-A-Thon of 2013. We are aware with all the new eReader’s coming out this Christmas some of us may be getting one for Christmas. 1. Reading List. We are compiling a list of books, which will be offered free in exchange for a review, of books that every participant will be able to choose from to read during the week. I am limiting each book to 5 readers per book and these books will ONLY be available for an electronic devise and not print. 2. Prize donations. We wish to set up two prize bundles for this contest – International and USA/Canada. We are looking for donations to these bundles. If you are donating a book to the first way to participate you can still do this way too if you wish, only please choose different books. Please can you let me know the following if you would like to participate in this second way:

The Read-A-Thon itself will be run from the 17th – 24th January and any format of book can be read (including print) but 1 book MUST be read from the compiled list per participant. The reviews can be posted at the participant’s individual site but a link list will be put on Read 2 Review for the books.

Romance Reading Challenge 2013

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Without further ado, here are the rules:
1. The challenge runs from January 1st, 2013 through December 31st, 2013.
2. "Romance" isn't limited to steamy Harlequin novels. There is a huge selection of books in this category such as contemporary romance, historical romance, romantic suspense and paranormal romance to name a few. As long as the story has romantic love between the two main characters your selection will fit this challenge. The novels do not need to have a happy ending either, there can also be unrequited love.
3. Choose at least 5 novels to read. You can change your choices at any time. Crossovers between other challenges are fine. All kinds of books count, ebooks and audiobooks too.
4. Read your book selections at your own pace in 2012 then post the link to your review(s). You don't need to have a blog, posting your reviews on Goodreads and LibraryThing counts as well. If you do have a blog and are joining us, please consider linking back to this post either with text or with one of the buttons provided below to help spread the word.

Giveaway
This year, I am hosting two giveaways for those who participate. One winner will be announced on February 14th, Valentines Day. The other winner will be announced on June 1st.
The giveaway prize is:
A $15.00 U.S. Amazon Gift E-Card or a  $15.00 U.S. Barnes & Noble Gift E-Card.

To enter to win:
1. Sign up for the Romance Reading Challenge 2013.
2. You have to have a minimum of one book read and reviewed for the challenge. Everyone who joins the RRC this year and has at least one book read and reviewed for the challenge will be eligible to win a gift card. Each book read and reviewed for the RRC gives you one entry. So the more books you read and review, the more times your name will go in the draw. I'll use Mr. Linky to keep track of books reviewed so make sure to link your reviews there.
3. Leave me a comment on this post with your valid email addy. Let me know which gift e-card you prefer.
4. I will announce the winning name at my blog on the two dates I mentioned. I will also notify the winner via email. If I don't hear back from you within 48 hours, the first runner up will be chosen.
Good luck and happy reading! Contest is open worldwide.

      Second Chances Reading Challenge

      Second Chances.200px

      January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

moan and groan in frustration before deciding it wasn’t worth our precious reading time to finish it. So, we put the book down, quit reading the series, blacklist the author, or sometimes, even refuse to read anymore from that genre. (That last one is a little extreme, but I have heard about it happening.) So I came up with an idea: Second Chances. For every book, series, author and even genre that you’ve given up on, Second Chanceschallenges you to go back and try it again.

If you’ve given up on reading a book, go back and try it again. If you’ve decided a series is too blah, try reading the next book, to see if it picks back up. If you’ve blacklisted an author, go try any other book by them. And if you’re avoiding an entire genre, go look around, see if anything catches your eye and give it a try.

This challenge is meant for readers to go back and see if they made a rash decision when they blacklisted an author. Maybe you’ll realize that you just weren’t in the right mood for that book when you first read it. Or maybe you’ll realize that you and that author just aren’t meant to be. Either way, this time you’ll know for sure.

      Here are the guidelines:

      1. The challenge will run from January 1, 2013 through December 31, 2013.
      2. Since this is a Second Chances challenge, there is no restriction on choosing your novels. They can definitely be from other challenges. However, the authors, series, books and genre must be something you gave up on – whether it’s a novel or a novella, all you have to do is try a different novel from that author, series or genre.
      3. I want this to be an easy challenge, so you can pick to do either 15, 25 or 50 Second Chances. It all depends on how fast you read and how adventurous you want to be. If you reach your goal halfway through the year, don’t stop. Any author you give a Second Chances to can be added to Mr. Linky. We all want to know about your Second Chanceexperience.
      4. After giving a book/series/author/genre a Second Chance, write your review and then come back here and add your link to Mr. Linky. Make sure you include your name and the author, but adding the title is completely up to you.
      5. Bloggers or Non-Bloggers alike are welcome. You don’t have to have a site to participate. You can link up via Facebook, GoodReads or even Amazon if you’d like.

So what do you think? Are you game to try a few new authors? If so, join the challenge by clicking here.

Once you reach your goal, you don’t have to stop. Any Second Chances you give, go ahead and head back here and add it to the list. Tell us why you gave the second chance and if it was worth it. You never know, you may inspire someone else to give that book/author/series/genre a second chance as well.

This reading challenge is hosted by Literary Escapism. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

Embarrassment of Riches TBR Reading Challenge 2013

                January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I intend to make a small dent in my TBR pile this year, beginning with challenging myself to read 24 (gasp!) this year. Yes, I originally said 12, but I’m trying to push myself, and it’s not as if it should be a chore. I acquired the darned things because I wanted to read them, right? Right!

So here we go.  Since I’m so last-minute with this I will allow people to sign up through January 8, though the challenge begins January 1.

RULES: To be considered a TBR book, you must own it prior to Jan 1, 2013. The book can count toward other challenges, as well. It can be fiction or nonfiction, poetry or play, as long as it is a book. This is not a picky challenge–just about reading the riches we already own.

On the last day of each month I will post an entry where you can say how many TBRs you read that month, titles, and whether you liked them or not. Full-blown reviews not required. You can list them in comments or link back to your own blog or page where they are listed.

At the end of the year I will have pretty badges for all levels, and if I haven’t learned to create them by myself, hopefully somebody else will make them for me.

There are five levels of accomplishment (and a bonus challenge) in the Embarrassment of Riches TBR Reading Challenge.

Copper:  Read 6 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Bronze: Read 12 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Silver: Read 24 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013

Gold: Read 36 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Platinum: Read 50 TBR books between Jan 1 and Dec 31 2013.

Bonus Challenge! The same levels are also available for digital samples. If you are like me, you also have a quizillion samples you’ve downloaded onto your e-reader. Culling through samples and deciding whether to keep reading or not is a separate challenge with all five levels and the same year-end prize–a special badge.

So, are you in?  And have I left anything out? 2013 Bucket List Reading Challenge

                January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

As we approach the beginning of a New Year, I can't help but think of all the books I want to read.  Not just the upcoming releases, but also those books that I feel "I Should Read"  whether it be a classic, or a Pulitzer Prize winner, or perhaps by an author nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature.  So, as I sit here looking out the window at what has now been classified as a "blizzard warning", I've decided to begin a "Bucket List" of all the books I want to read.  And in so doing, I've also decided to host my first reading challenge...The 2013 Bucket List Reading Challenge!

                Here are the challenge details:

                1. This challenge will begin on January 1st, 2013 and end December 31, 2013. On January 1st, 2014  I'll announce three lucky participants who will each receive a free book of their choice (from their own bucket list of course).
                2. Choose a level.  The books chosen for this challenge should  include any combination of Fiction such as the Classics, Pulitzer Prize recipients, Nobel Peace recipients, or other forms of noteworthiness as well as Non-Fiction.  A good place to start is by browsing the many lists of "great books" on Good Reads or the Pulitzer website.  It's all up to you...it's your "bucket list"!  However, the books for this event may not include books released during 2013.

                Levels:

                • Inspired:              6 books
                • Committed:        12 books
                • Tenacious:          24 books

                3. This challenge can cross-over to your other reading challenges.
                4. You do not need a blog to participate! If you are not a blogger, you can post your reviews at Goodreads, Shelfari, or LibraryThing and link them up here.
                5. All formats of books are acceptable: Bound copies, e-books, and audiobooks (as long as they are unabridged).
                6. I will add an additional linky to this post for your reviews beginning January 1st.
                7. Create a sign-up post and link back to this post (please share a few of your "bucket list" titles as well). Sign up with Mister Linky below! Be sure to use the direct url to your sign-up post and not the url to your blog.
                8. Grab the challenge button and post it in your sidebar.

This reading challenge is hosted by Kimberly’s Bookshelf. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

The 2013 Middle East Reading Challenge

                    January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

                    REGION

Referred by many nowadays as the "Greater Middle East" or "MENA" (Middle East/North Africa), our challenge will focus on the North African nations of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt; the Levantine nations of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan and the Palestinian Territories; all the nations within, bordering or relatively close proximity to the Arabian Peninsula including Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and the Gulf Emirates.
                    • After a great deal of agonizing I've decided to not include Turkey. Nothing personal, it's just a judgment call. However, if you come across a book dealing with that nation's role in the Middle East by all means feel free to include it. Of course, since much of the Middle East was ruled by the Ottoman Empire until the end of WWI, books dealing with period of history are cool too.
                    • I've also decided to not include the nations of the Horn of Africa or its neighbors Sudan and South Sudan. Yet another judgment call.

                    READING GOAL

Read as many books as you'd like. Eligible books include those which are written by Middle Eastern writers, or take place in the Greater Middle East, or are concerned with the Greater Middle East and with historical and contemporary Middle Eastern issues. I'd encourage you to read at least three books written by Middle Eastern writers.

                    LEVELS

Sometimes  it can be fun to strive towards a particular reading level, Therefore, I've come up with a few in hopes of inspiring folks.
                    • Tourist: Read 1 to 5 books
                    • Diplomat: Read 5 to 10 books
                    • Foreign Policy Specialist: Read 10 to 15 books
                    • Scholar: Read 15 books or more

                    GENRES

                    • Fiction – novels, short stories, poetry, drama and YA.  Note: You can choose to read a number of individual and uncollected short stories.  In this case, 12 such stories would constitute 1 book.  Individual poems do not count but books of poetry do. (By the way, the Middle East has produced a huge body of amazing poetry, some of it hundreds or even thousands of years old. Feel free to explore some of it.)
                    • Non-fiction – memoirs, autobiographies, history, current events, religion and political theory.

                    READING SUGGESTIONS

                    • Cover at least two regions, pick from North Africa, the Levant and/or one or more of the nations within or near the Arabian Peninsula.
                    • Include translated fiction from Arabic, Modern Hebrew, Berber, Kurdish or Farsi literature
                    • You can mix classic and contemporary fiction.
                    • If you are intend to read mostly non-fiction (like me) then please include at least one book of fiction.
                    • Since this region is the birthplace of the three major monotheistic faiths, why not include one their sacred writings like the Quran, the Gnostic scriptures, the Talmud or the Dead Sea Scrolls.
                    • For years this region has been called the "cradle of civilization." If you feel inclined, explore the region's ancient history or maybe its archaeological discoveries. There's a ton of those books out there.
                    • The region is also the birthplace of or the inspiration for a number of ideologies including Pan-Arabism, Zionism, Palestinian nationalism and Islamism. Why not consider something by one of their proponents-or critics.

                    Classic Double Challenge 2013

                    January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

By "classics" you know I'm being very loose in my definition, as this challenge lets you read fairy tales, mythologies, classics, any kind of original story to compare with the retelling. Also "retelling" is pretty loose too - the original and the newer book have to relate in some way that you can define; it doesn't have to be a straight-forward retelling.  Hopefully these definitions allow you the wiggle room needed to find something to fit your fancy.

                    Here are a few examples:
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead.
The first is kind of a "classic" and in the second, the main character loves A Wrinkle in Time and it plays a part in the plot, but this is not a retelling.

                    Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein series by Kenneth Oppel.
The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein is a prequel series to Frankenstein.

                    Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
                    Jane by April Lindner.
Jane is a retelling of Jane Eyre, set in a modern day.

So, you can see there are lots of options for you.  If you need some inspiration for retellings, I've compiled a rather extensive list of retellings.  I have another list for fairy tale retellings.  Also, during the Retell Me a Story celebration next month I will be highlighting some newer retellings that have been released or are coming out soon.
And, of course, there are levels of participation, so you can choose how much or how little you'd like to commit to:

Small: You read 2 related books.
Medium: You read 4 books (2 sets of related books).
Large: You read 6 books (3 sets of related books).
Super Size: You read 8 books (4 sets of related books).

                    Quick Fix Challenge

                    January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I find that many times when a reading challenge has to do with a book's size it usually about reading bigger books. Sometimes, because I'm in between books, life is getting out of hand, or things are just getting in the way, there's just not enough time to read a big book. Who says bigger is better anyway? Sometimes things break and all you need is a little tape and it'll hold. So this is the "Quick fix Challenge" whether it's a love for smaller books, or just trying to squeeze in a quick read, or maybe times running out and you need to read in some more books quickly. This is a challenge about reading books with less than 300 pages.

                    Challenge Details:

                    • The challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
                    • Sign ups will be open until mid December.
                    • You don't have to be a blogger to participate. However, leave a comment and tell me what level  you're aiming for.
                    • For bloggers, post up a challenge sign up post saying what level you've signed up for. Be sure to sign-up with your sign-up post in the linky.
                    • You don't have to review the books you read however if you do, you will be able to post your links to your reviews here. (I'll have a post up for reviews up in January.)
                    • Books have to have less than 300 pages to count.
                    • Books such as MG/YA, graphic novels/manga, audio, rereads, can count toward your goal.
                    • Feel free to crossover the books you read for this challenge with other challenges.

Now the Levels/It will hold with:

                    String: 5 books

                    Paperclips: 10 books

                    Duck tape: 15 books

                    Gorilla glue: 20+ books

                    2013 Anne Rice Challenge

                    AnneRiceChallenge2013
                    January 1, 2013 – December 1, 2013

Since I vastly underestimated the amount of time it takes to read Anne Rice novels, I still have a lot left to read after the 2012 Anne Rice Challenge. So I've decided to host the challenge again!

Join me in one of several levels, according to how many Anne Rice books you plan to read in 2013.
                    Rules:
                    • Ebooks are fine. Audiobooks are fine as long as they are the unabridged versions.
                    • Rereads and crossovers with other challenges are fine.
                    • You can change your level at any time.
                    • The challenge goes from January 1st to December 31st, 2013.
                    • If you read, for example, the edition that has the first 3 Vampire Chronicles books together in one volume, that still counts as 3. We're going by how the books were originally published.
                    • All books written by Anne Rice count, not just the Vampire Chronicles, including those written under a pseudonym.
                    • You can sign up any time from now until November 30, 2013.

                    Levels:
                    • Louis de Pointe du Lac (1 to 5 books)
                    • Lestat de Lioncourt (6 to 10 books)
                    • Armand (11 to 15 books)
                    • Marius de Romanus (16 to 20 books)
                    • Maharet (21 to 25)
                    • Akasha (26 to 30)

I'm aiming for the Armand level this year. I have 13 Anne Rice books left to read, and I'm going to read as many of them as possible. I finished most of my rereads and a few new ones in 2012. The only reread I have left is The Vampire Armand. The books I plan to read are as follows:
                    • Lasher
                    • Taltos
                    • Servant of the Bones
                    • Violin
                    • The Vampire Armand
                    • Pandora
                    • Vittorio the Vampire
                    • Merrick
                    • Blood and Gold
                    • Blackwood Farm
                    • Blood Canticle
                    • Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt

I’ve Always Meant to Read that Book Challenge

                    Ive_Always_Meant_To_Read_That_Book_2013_a
                    January 2013 – December 2013

The past couple of months, I have been thinking about all the books I’ve always meant to read. The list is extensive – and I’m sure many of you can relate! So, I decided that this year’s challenge is not going to be limited to one author. I’m going to challenge myself to read twelve books I’ve always meant to read, one each month of 2013. I’m hoping that some of you will want to read the same books, and thus each month will be like a read-along.
In order to get the most participation from you, my fellow readers, I’m going to give you a long list of books to vote on. You can join me for one book, two, five, or even all twelve! Simply leave your top five choices in the comments below. On December 28th, I’ll post the twelve titles that got the most votes, and a schedule of which books we’ll read each month.
I really meant to get this post up last month, so there would be longer to pick the books and be ready to start by January 1st, but I’m thinking that many of you probably have a lot of these books sitting on your to-read shelf, just like I do. Once I know the winning books, I will choose a short one for January, in case it takes some of us a week or so to get our hands on a copy.
Here are the books we’ll be choosing from:
                    Middlemarch by George Eliot
                    1984 by George Orwell
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
Love in a Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons
Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
                    Bleak House by Charles Dickens
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett
                    The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova
                    Forever by Pete Hamill
The Local News by Miriam Gershow
                    My Antonia by Willa Cather
Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner
An Equal Music by Vikram Seth
The Complete Stories by Flannery O’Connor
Again, leave your top five picks in the comments below. Once we have our titles and a schedule, I’ll post a challenge sign-up page that you can link your blog to. Happy reading!

                    2013 Women Challenge

                    prova 02 ridotta
                    January 2013 – December 2013
After taking part into so many challenges in 2012 I decided to launch my own for 2013!
Checking the books I have read in the last year I noticed that I have read a lot of authors who are men and far fewer women writers.
There is no real reason because, of course, I don’t choose books based on the author’s sex, but this intrigued me and I decided to create a challenge called the "Women Challenge".
This challenge will make us want to read more books of any kind written by women, so choose whatever you like and get involved!
Set your level and, if you like, leave me a comment on this post listing your three favourite women writers, in order to suggest new names to other participants as well.
Here are mine (they are just the first ones coming to my mind):
                    * Isabel Allende
                    * Marcela Serrano
                    * Kathy Reichs
                    Rules:

                    * anyone can join;
                    * you don't need a blog to partecipate: if you are a non-blogger please leave a comment with a link (if you review elsewhere) to your review or with the list of the books you read and the level you choose;
                    * audio, e-books, bound books and re-reads are ok;
                    * create a sign up post on your blog and post the link in the linky below (scroll down please, it's at the end of the italian translation);
                    * challenge goes from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013
                    Levels:

Level 1: BABY GIRL - read 1 to 5 books written by a woman author
Level 2: GIRLS POWER - read 6 to 10 books written by a woman author
Level 3: SUPER GIRL - read 11 to 15 books written by a woman author
Level 4: WONDER WOMAN - read 16+ books written by a woman author

                    2013 Literary Exploration Reading Challenge

                    logo-150x150
                    January 2013 – December 2013
Literary Exploration tries to explore all different genres in the hope to become a well-rounded reader and even discover something new. So in 2013 we would like to challenge you to explore further.
Instead of increasing the book club to two books a month we decided we wanted people to read what they wanted to read; but we also want people to explore. So we are challenging everyone to dedicate either 12, 24 or 36 books that you would normally read to different genres. We have compiled a list which hopefully will give you a chance to explore literature a little deeper.
It’s real simple; below you will see an easy (12 books), hard (24 books) or insane (36 books) challenge. Each genre links to the Goodreads genre page if you need some suggestions on what to read. We want you to have some fun and explore; hopefully you might find a new genre that peaks your interest. To sign up either join the Literary Exploration book club on Goodreads and talk about your progress with others involved or for the bloggers out there, if you want to add it as part of your blogging experience simply let us know with a link (to your Literary Exploration Challenge page) in the comments below so our readers can see how you are going.
This is the first year doing this and if all goes well we might expand and make it a yearly challenge. If we do decide to do this on a yearly basis and you feel that there are some genres are either too heavily focused on or not mentioned at all, please let me know. The idea of this challenge is to have a well-balanced list of genres and not focusing on one genre more than any others.
Good luck all who decide to join in. I personally am going to go for the 36 book, insane challenge and I’m really looking forward to it. While there are some genres I’m not looking forward to reading, it’s all part of being a literary explorer. What could be wrong with that?

                    2013 Mystery/Crime Reading Challenge

                    images (1)
                    January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I love a good mystery, my favorite authors include Agatha Christie, James Patterson, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; so I thought that having a reading challenge for 2013 that includes reading mystery/crime novels and short stories would be fun, even if I turn out to be the only one participating! So here are the rules should you want to join in the fun:

                    1.) The challenge starts January 1, 2013 and ends  December 31, 2013.
2.) You can read any novel, short story or author just so that the genre is mystery/crime.
3.) 1 novel counts as 1 novel( 1 novel is anything over 100 pages) of course but you will have to read 5 short stories to count as 1 novel.
4.) There will be a monthly post for you to add a link or links to your post showing the progress that you have made so far.
5.) Each month there will be a drawing for those that linked up their participation in the challenge for that month the prize is a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble or Amazon. These gift cards are delivered via email so you can only use it at Barnes and Noble.com not the store and of course Amazon is all online anyway.

If you don't have a blog you can also link up through GoodReads or Flickr (for Flickr just keep track by having a picture of the novel and then numbering them in the description so I know where you are at in the challenge).

If you read a certain number of novels you receive a rank at the end I will award a secret prize to the person who reads the most books:
                    5 books= Detective
                    10 books = Sergeant
                    15 books = Lieutenant
                    20 books = Captain
                    25 books = Chief
                    30+ books = Sherlock Holmes

                    New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge

                    NewYearBooks

                    December 26,2012 – January 31st, 2013

So many New Year’s Resolutions falter within days of January 1. Readers know that one way to sustain resolve and focus is to read a book on the topic. The goal of this challenge is to build a community around reading books to support our New Year’s Resolutions so that we can share book ideas and encourage each other in our pursuits.
Whether you are resolved to apply to graduate school, write that novel, or eat healthier, there are books that will help. The New Year’s Resolution Reading Challenge is to read 1 to 4 books that will stimulate action on your goal. Here are the levels:
                    Resolved: 1 book
                    Determined: 2 books
                    Committed: 3 books
                    Passionate: 4 books
The books can all support the same resolution and be on similar topics (4 books on gardening, for example) or they can be about different resolutions (1 book on  French, 1 book on home-cooking, 1 book on leadership skills, and 1 book on financial stability, for example).

                    The 2013 Classics Catch-Up Challenge

                    Classics Challenge
                    January – December 2013
                    Quirky Bookworm says:
Remember how I was going to read six classics in 2012? But I only read four?
Well this year I'm making it public. I'm announcing the six books I'm gonna read. And, I'm inviting you to join me!
To make it more challenging, I'm gonna add a second or third option each time, and see if maybe, just maybe, I can read 13 classics in 2013!
All you have to do to enter in my challenge is put your info in the GoogleDoc below (because it feels much more official if you're putting your name to it!), and then read along with me. Every two months I'll have a little link-up/series of questions about the current book(s) for you to participate in.
Below are the six classics that I've never read (the ones in bold - and yes, I'm totally embarrassed to be admitting this). The other titles I've read before, but it's been years. Re-reading participation is absolutely welcome, you just have to be willing to actually re-read the WHOLE thing, and participate in the link-ups. Scouts honor!
                    January-February
                      Anna Karenina
                      Wuthering Heights

                    Wishlist Challenge 2013

                    January 1, 2013 - December 31, 2013

Last year the Wishlist Challenge was hosted by Judith at Leeswammes. I had so much fun with the 2012 edition that gave me that extra push to allow me to read books that I actually wanted to read for a while. This year Judith asked me if I wanted to organise it, so here it is! Thank you Judith!

Here is the challenge (shameless copy-paste from last year):

Read 12 books (one for every month of the year) that you would like to read, but don’t already have on your shelves.

                    Rules:

                    1. The challenge runs from January 1st, 2013 to December 31st, 2013.

                    2. You are to read 12 books from your current wishlist. If you don’t have a list anywhere, write down books that you are eager to read, that you don’t own yet, and choose 12 books off that list.

                    3. If you can’t find a book that’s on your wishlist (your library doesn’t have it, or you don’t want/can’t buy it) then you can use another book. But: you are not allowed to include any NEWLY added books for this challenge. So, whatever your list is now, that’s it. I.e. you can’t read amazing things about a book on someone else’s blog, decide you want to read it, then read it for the Wishlist Challenge. The opposite is true: you want to read something for the Wishlist Challenge, so you go to your wishlist, find a book that was on that wishlist before January 1st, 2013, and read it for the challenge.

                    4. You can overlap with other challenges, as long as you read books that were on your wishlist before January 1st, 2013.

                    5. Sign up here by leaving a comment with a link to your announcement post for this challenge.

                    6. When you’ve read your 12 books, come back here and leave a comment with a link to your final post about the challenge. Make sure you’ve done this by January 15th, 2014.
                    ------------------------------------
Okay so here is my own list for now. But I know myself, I will switch it up ;) My books come from my Wishlist on Goodreads (which currently has 250 books on it!).

                    1. Unravel me - Tahereh Mafi
                    2. Reached - Ally Condie
                    3. The Kitchen House - Kathleen Grissom
                    4. Thirteen Reasons Why - Jay Asher
                    5. Insurgent - Veronica Roth
                    6. Whats Left of Me - Kat Zhang
                    7. Across the Universe - Beth Revis
                    8. Through the Ever Night - Veronica Rossi
                    9. Requiem - Lauren Oliver
                    10. Uglies - Scott Westerfeld
                    11. Kobato vol. 5 - CLAMP
                    12. Kobato vol. 6 - CLAMP

There is an overkill of dystopia on here, I know. But I started a lot of series in 2012 and I really want to read the sequels or finish the series this year. Same goes for Kobato, which is manga. Those are the last two of the series :) I might use this month to add Dutch books from another wishlist on my phone, but for now this is it.
