2013 Paranormal Reading Challenge

1/1/2013 - 12/31/2013

Welcome to the 2013 Paranormal Reading Challenge hosted by Megan Likes Books andAuntie Spinelli Reads! This is my first time EVER hosting anything, so I'm quite excited! The lovely Megan came up with the idea for this, so all credit goes to her (well, I made the purty button!).
[Megan] There are so many awesome sub-genres of paranormal books, that it's easy to find one you like and stick with it. So that's why I decided to make a reading challenge with the goal of reading about all kinds of paranormal creatures.

The goal is to read at least one book featuring each of the following paranormal creatures: Vampires; Werewolves/Shifters; Fey; Angels/Nephilim; Mermaids; Dragons; Zombies; Demons; Witches/Wizards; Ghosts; Aliens; Other (ie: sirens, unicorns, centaurs, timetravel etc.)

Guidelines:
  1. This challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013.
  2. You must have a blog to able to participate, since reviews must be added to the linky.
  3. When you sign up with the linky, please put the link to your post about joining the Paranormal Reading Challenge.
  4. You're welcome to list your books beforehand or just add as you go.
  5. Sign-ups are open until December 1, 2013
  6. At the beginning of each month, I will post a kick-start post, each month featuring a different category of paranormal creature. This post will also include a linky to include your reviews from that month.
  7. Each review you link will qualify you for an entry into the monthy giveaway and if your review includes the feature paranormal creature of that month, you get a bonus entry.
  8. Each book can only count for one category, even if it contains more than one paranormal creature. For example, Twilight contains both vampires and werewolves, but you can't use it for both the vampires and werewolves/shifters categories.
  9. Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a grand prize giveaway at the end of the year.
  10. If you read multiple books from one category, feel free to add them to the linkies. Don't stop at just one!
  11. Book can count for other challenges.

Each month, we'll be featuring one of the creatures on the list at both Megan Likes Books and Auntie Spinelli Reads.
  • January - Vampires
  • February - Angels/Nephilim
  • March - Fey
  • April - Demons
  • May - Aliens
  • June - Zombies

2013 Novel In Verse Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I’m excited to introduce a new reading challenge for next year: the Novel in Verse Challenge. Ever since my first verse novel (Love & Leftovers by Sarah Tregay), I’ve been in love with the format. I’m always so amazed that authors can cram so much feeling into such a unique format. So, to celebrate all things verse, I’m holding a year-long reading challenge. The goal is simple: read books in verse.

Brief Instructions:
1. Create a post announcing your intention to join the challenge (include the challenge graphic and a link to this post).
2. Sign up for the challenge using the linky below, and link to your intention post (or Goodreads post).
2. a. Optional: Put a
challenge button on your blog’s sidebar.
3. Read and review at least 6 verse novels during the year.
4. Add each review to the
review linky at any time.

That’s it! For extra fun, there will be giveaways, mini-challenges, interviews and guest posts throughout the year, so keep an eye out for those. More specific instructions can be found on the FAQ page.

If you love verse novels like I do and want to help out in any way, check out the main Challenge page. Some options include hosting giveaways, guest posts, hosting mini-challenges, or anything else you can think of!

I’m excited to start this challenge and hope you’ll join me for the fun!

2013 Mount TBR Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

As I mentioned last year, I am a bookaholic.  I can't let a bookstore (used or new, it doesn't matter) go by without stopping in ("just to look") and walking out with at least something--if not an armload. I wait all year for the Red Cross Book Sale in October so I can cart them out by the bagful. And, well, that means that I wind up with gigantic piles of TBR books stacked up around my backroom. I don't have a TBR shelf. Oh, no. I have "Mount TBR"...actually a whole mountain range. And it doesn't matter that I've just spent the last year working on my mountain range with the Mount TBR Reading Challenge.  They just keep on sprouting up.

So, once again, I plan to concentrate on reading primarily from my own books this year. And you're invited to join me in knocking out some of those books that have been waiting in the wings for weeks....months...even years.

Challenge Levels (I've adjusted the levels just slightly this year):

Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Blanc: Read 24 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Vancouver: Read 36 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Ararat: Read 48 books from your TBR piles/s
Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 60 books from your TBR pile/s
El Toro: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s
Mt. Everest: Read 100 books from your TBR pile/s
Mount Olympus (Mars): Read 150+ books from your TBR pile/s

And the rules:

*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find that you're on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are certainly welcome to upgrade.

*Challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2013.

*You may sign up anytime from now until November 30th, 2013.

*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2013. No ARCs (none), no library books. No rereads. [To clarify--based on a question raised last year--the intention is to reduce the stack of books that you have bought for yourself or received as presents {birthday, Christmas, "just because," etc.}. Audiobooks and E-books may count if they are yours and they are one of your primary sources of backlogged books.]

*You may count any "currently reading" book that you begin prior to January 1--provided that you had 50% or more of the book left to finish in 2013.  I will trust you all on that.

*Books may be used to count for other challenges as well.

*Feel free to submit your list in advance (as incentive to really get those books taken care of) or to tally them as you climb.

*A blog and reviews are not necessary to participate. If you have a blog, then please post a challenge sign up and link THAT post (not your home page) into the linky [at the host’s site]. Non-bloggers, please leave a comment [at the host’s site] declaring your challenge level--OR, if you are a member of Goodreads, I will once again put together a group for the challenge there. Feel free to sign up HERE.  And, finally, I am contemplating a review tracker for this year.  I will post a link if that works out.

2013 Color Coded Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Last year I had several folks either discover this reading challenge late in the game or who enjoyed it so much that they asked me to host again.  Just this week I've had requests from the color fans asking for another round. So, for your challenge reading pleasure, I will once again host The Color Coded Reading Challenge beginning January 2013.  Since this is my third year in, I've loosened the categories up a bit--I will now accept any shade of the required colors.

Here are the rules:

*Read nine books in the following categories.

1. A book with "Blue" or any shade of Blue (Turquoise, Aquamarine, Navy, etc.) in the title.

2. A book with "Red" or any shade of Red (Scarlet, Crimson, Burgundy, etc.) in the title.

3. A book with "Yellow" or any shade of Yellow (Gold, Lemon, Maize, etc.)in the title.

4. A book with "Green" or any shade of Green (Emerald, Lime, Jade, etc.) in the title.

5. A book with "Brown" or any shade of Brown (Tan, Chocolate, Beige, etc.) in the title.

6. A book with "Black" or any shade of Black (Jet, Ebony, Charcoal, etc.) in the title.

7. A book with "White" or any shade of White (Ivory, Eggshell, Cream, etc.)in the title.

8. A book with any other color in the title (Purple, Orange, Silver, Pink, Magenta, etc.).

9. A book with a word that implies color (Rainbow, Polka-dot, Plaid, Paisley, Stripe, etc.).

* Any book read from January 1 through December 31, 2013 will count.

*Crossovers with other challenges are fine.

*Everyone who completes all nine categories will be entered in a year-end drawing for a book-related prize package.

*Please post about the challenge on your blog. Sign ups accepted until Nov 30, 2013.

*Please sign up using the Linky [at the host’s site]. Give your name & blog (Example: Bev @ My Reader's Block) and use a direct link to your challenge post as your url. Please don't connect to just your home page.  Links to a list on GoodReads or other social media sites are also acceptable.

*Please use the Review Page to post review links and a final wrap-up post when you finish the challenge.  (Review Page Link coming soon)

*No blog or GoodReads site? That's okay. Post a comment [at the host’s site] to announce your entry into the challenge and when you have completed the challenge just post a comment at the review site with a list of your books.

2013 Genre/Sub-Genre Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I always thought that I read "almost everything" but even after several years of blogging, reviews, and challenges I realized that I still limit myself when it comes to the sub-genres. Of course, I can't just read more sub-genres....I've got to make a challenge out it! ;-)

Requirements:

  • read three books from each genre
  • each book must be a different sub-genre (sub-genres can be found here at Writer's Digest)
  • each book counts only once for this challenge
  • books may overlap with other challenges
  • any format allowed (print, ebook, audio)
  • reviews are not necessary but a list of books read is.
  • a blog is not necessary, just comment that you want to join in

There are TWO levels:

  • read two from each main genre
  • read three form each main genre
Now for the main genres. . .

Romance

Horror

Thriller/Suspense

Science Fiction/Fantasy

Mystery/Crime

This is not how I usually think of them but this is how Writer's Digest has broken them down. Check out the sub-genres descriptions and it will make sense.

One more requirement....go ahead a start on the 1st and get a head start on your reading!

2013 Genre Variety Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

This is the first year that I will be hosting the Genre Variety Reading Challenge. If there is already a challenge similar to this, please can you let me know as I don’t want to encroach on anyone’s ideas. This is just something that came to me that I hope will be fun and that others will enjoy.

But what is it?

The challenge is to read books from different genres throughout the year. I have found that blogging has opened my eyes to so many genres that I would never have tried before, simply from recommendations, and the idea of this challenge is to keep that going. The challenge is to read a large variety of genres within one year.

Other Important Info;

  • Runs from January 1st 2013 until December 31st 2013. Sign ups will be open until December 1st 2013.
  • There are five levels to challenge yourself too. You may move up a level but not go down a level. These are all outlined below. Please mention in your sign up post which level you will aim for.
  • The genres you choose to read are up to you. As long as every book is different, whichever genre you wish to read you can.
  • Every month there will be a post on this blog to link up to your update post / review(s)
  • There will be a giveaway at the end of the challenge, and maybe a few within the year but these are TBD.
  • To sign up, you will need to write a post saying which level you are challenging yourself too and then use the linky list. Non-Bloggers may post in the comments of [the host’s] post.
  • Any book formats are accepted.
  • Novellas and Novels are all accepted for this challenge.
  • YA, NA and Adult books all count towards this challenge.

2013 Finishing the Series Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I decided to host this challenge again, even though I made no headway at all last year with it. LOL Still, I love series books and I really need to catch up. I hope some of you will join in with me. Here's the info...

It's a challenge for all those series books you started at some point and haven't finished. I know I'll start a series and read the first book, then get distracted with other books and never get back to the series. Before I know it, the series has 10 books - I get overwhelmed and don't go back to it. Now, I want to finish a couple.

Here are the rules guidelines.

1) All books that are part of a continuing series qualify (i.e. Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove, Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, James Patterson's Alex Cross, etc. etc.)

2) It doesn't matter if you have 1 or 10 books in a series to complete it, it qualifies (i.e. if you only need to read one more Sookie Stackhouse book to complete the goal, that's fine) The goal is to complete a series from wherever you are up to until the last published book.

3) The qualification period is January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. Books must be read during this time frame to count.

4) Take the button above and post about it. Use the Mr. Linky below to sign up and make sure you link it directly to your post about this challenge. (Note: I'm not going to be using the Finishing the Series Blog I created last year. I'm going to keep everything here.)

5) If you don't have a blog, that's fine. Just leave a comment to sign up and tell us what you are reading.
IF YOU WANT TO LINK UP YOUR REVIEWS OR, FOR THOSE WITHOUT A BLOG, LEAVE A COMMENT [at the host’s site].

6) Any format of book counts - audio, ebook, etc.

7) You should choose the series you want to finish before the challenge begins, but it isn't necessary. It's fine to change series during the year - as long as you complete whichever series it is.

8) Choose a level....
     Level 1 - Complete 1 series.
     Level 2 - Complete 2 series.
Level 3 - Complete 3 or more series.

2013 What An Animal Reading Challenge VI

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

The What an Animal Reading Challenge V ends on February 28, 2013. I'm starting the new challenge a bit earlier because I want the begin and end dates to be the same as my other challenges (it's easier for me to remember). So, the What An Animal Reading Challenge V will still end in February, so if you haven't completed it, you still have time. However, for anyone who wants to start the next animal reading challenge, What An Animal Reading Challenge VI will begin on January 1st. Read on for more details...

The rules are really simple...

1. Read at least 6 books that have any of the following requirements:

     a. there is an animal in the title of the book

     b. there is an animal on the cover of the book

     c. an animal plays a major role in the book

     d. a main character is (or turns into) an animal (define that however you'd like).

2. The animal can be any type of animal (real or fictitious)--dog, cat, monkey, wolf, snake, insect, hedgehog, aardvark...dragon, mermaid, centaur, vampire, werewolf...you get the idea...

3. Challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. That’s a full year to read at least 6 books (you can read more if you’d like).

4. Books can be fiction or nonfiction.

5. You may make a list of books at the beginning of the challenge or you can just list them as you find them.

6. Book titles may be swapped out at anytime (assuming you made a list to begin with).

7. Crossovers with other challenges are permitted and encouraged.

8. You don't have to have a blog or write a review, but you can if you want to.
If you don't have a blog, just post in the comment section that you'd like to join. You can post your books in there.

9. Books can be in any format of your choice (print, audio, ebooks)

If you'd like to sign up, please use Mr. Linky [at the host’s site]. I'm going to keep this challenge sign up here instead of using the What an Animal Reading Challenge blog I started last year. It's easier for me to keep them all here.

There will be one linky to sign up, one linky for completed reviews and one linky for completed challenge wrap up posts.

2013 7 Continents, 7 Billion People, 7 Books Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

The idea of this reading challenge is to explore the world by books from different continents and countries, and by visiting various world lists while planning the reads, to encounter the one or other unknown angle and fact about our world.

This challenge was inspired by a global reading challenge in 2012, and the side effect it had: looking at books from a different, geographical angle. And: mapping our world in continents and books, which turned into the most popular blog post in my book blog so far, and lead to this surprise realization: "If you wanted to read around the world in 7 books, you actually would have to go and look for 4 books from Asia and 1 book from Africa - and then for 2 anthologies that cover the rest of the world in their pages." (here's the whole post: The World in 7 Books, or: mapping our world by continents. )

The idea for 2013 is to continue with the global reading and exploring from 7 new, interesting angles, including some trends of our modern civilization. Why 7? To keep it simple and playful, and leave space for extra reads that might be inspired by the lists. Also, with 7 continents, and the world population reaching 7 billions, the 7 seems to be the best number for this kind of challenge.

7 Angles and Books to explore the world

The challenge: to select and read seven books, each belonging to one of the following categories:
- the 7 countries with the most population

- the 7 highest countries in the world

- the 7 oldest countries of the world

- one of the 7 megacities of the world

- the 7 countries with the most immigrants

- the 7 richest (or poorest) countries

- the 7 most rainy (or dry) countries

Below are some more details to the country categories, with links to country lists.

Challenge Guidelines:

  • This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2013 – Dec 31, 2013.
  • Books can be any format (novel, non-fiction, poetry or story collection, anthology, as well as any physical format: print, ebook, audio)
  • You are welcome to count these books towards any other challenges as well
  • The sorting of the 7 lists is just a suggestion.
  • When picking a country, the idea is to also pick an author from that country. If that turns out to be difficult, try to find an expat author who lived in the country for a while.
  • In the next weeks, I will add some additional resources: links to book and author lists at Goodreads and Wikipedia, etc.
  • I also plan to put together an info / introduction blog post to each of the 7 lists, and also update it with the books read during the challenge, and suggested reads and links etc..

Resources, lists, links:
Here are the 7 country categories, with links to the global lists, and with the top 7 countries listed already. For each category, pick a country from the top 7 list, and then pick a book from that country. As reference, i mostly linked to the wiki-lists, as those often offer additional search options.

1) The starting point:
A book from one of the 7 countries with the most population

2) From most populated to the mountains:
A book from one of the 7 highest countries in the world

3) From high to old:
A book from one of the 7 oldest countries of the world

  • It's an own challenge to create a definite ranking of the oldest countries of the world, which makes this question interesting in its own way. Some references:About/Geography and here: Wiki-answers.
  • Some of the oldest countries: Japan, China, San Marino, Egypt
4) From old to new:
A book from one of the megacities of the world
5) From megacity to migration:
A book from one of the 7 countries with the most immigrants

6) From people to money:
A book from one of the 7 richest - or poorest - countries

  • Link: List of countries by gross domestic product
  • Rank 1-7: Luxembourg, Qatar, Macau, Norway, Singapore, Brunei, Hong Kong
  • Rank 173-180: Congo, Liberia, Eritrea, Burundi, Niger, Central African Republic, Sierra Leone

7) From society to environment:
A book from one of the 7 most rainy or dry countries

  • Link: Precipitation by country
  • The rainy top 7: Guinea, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, Gabon, Burma, Malaysia, Guyana
  • The dry top 7: Peru, Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Erimates, Kuwait, Syria, Djibouti

Foodie's Read 2013 Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Margot @ Joyfully Retired has decided that she no longer wants to continue with the Foodie's Read challenge. She offered me the chance to start hosting the challenge, which I am thrilled to do.

Many of us who love to eat also love to read. But we go beyond that. We love to read about food. If that is you, then you are invite to join us in the Foodies Read Challenge for 2013. This is the second year in which we’ll indulge ourselves with good food writing.

If you are new to a food/reading challenge, you may be wondering – what is a “food book”? A food book is a book which is centered around food and/or drinks. That could be a cookbook, a food biography or memoir, a non-fiction book focused around a specific food, wine, chef or restaurant. Also allowed is a fictional story in which food plays a major role.

Here’s how the challenge works:
1. Decide how many food books you want to read in 2013. Pick one of the reading levels below. Remember, this is a challenge, so try pushing yourself.
     Levels:
     Short-Order Cook: 1 to 3 books
Pastry Chef: 4 to 8 books
     Sous-Chef: 9 to 13 books
Chef de Cuisine: 14 to 18
     Cordon-Bleu Chef: More than 19
2. Grab the challenge button and write a post on your blog so we can spread the word. No blog? That’s okay. Sign up in the comments section.
3. After you read each book for the challenge, come back here and tell us about it. Click on the correct category for your book (on the menu bar) and post the link to your review. We’ll use the same categories as last year: Cookbooks, Memoirs/Biographies, Fiction, and Nonfiction. I’ll also include a page where you link up your Challenge Wrap-Up post.

Guidelines:

The challenge runs from January 1 through December 31, 2013.

You don’t need a pre-selected list of books.

It’s okay to cross over with other challenges.

Any book format is allowed (print, audio, ebook)

This reading challenge is hosted by Foodie’s Read 2013. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

2013 Sea Haven Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Although I hosted this challenge for 2012, I did not make much headway in this series. So, I'm going to host it again for 2013!

The books in the Sea Haven Reading Challenge are comprised of two different series: the Drake Sisters and the Sisters of the Heart. Since the Sisters of the Heart series appears to be a spin-off of the Drake Sisters series, it would probably be best to start with that one first.

The Sea Haven novels by Christine Feehan are:

  1. Magic in the Wind (Drake Sisters, Book #1)
  2. The Twilight Before Christmas (Drake Sisters, Book #2)
  3. Oceans of Fire (Drake Sisters, Book #3)
  4. Dangerous Tides (Drake Sisters, Book #4)
  5. Safe Harbor (Drake Sisters, Book #5)
  6. Turbulent Sea (Drake Sisters, Book #6)
  7. Hidden Currents (Drake Sisters, Book #7)
  8. Water Bound (Sisters of the Heart, Book #1)
  9. Spirit Bound (Sisters of the Heart, Book #2)

Please read below for the challenge guidelines.

4. You do not need a blog to participate! If you are not a blogger, you can post your reviews at Goodreads, Shelfari, or LibraryThing and link them up here.

2013 Cruisin’ Thru the Cozies Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Welcome to the third annual Cruisin' thru the Cozies Reading Challenge! I'm still loving the cozies and this is one of the few challenges I plan to continue hosting.

To find out exactly what a cozy mystery is, check out Cozy-Mystery.com. This site is dedicated to cozy mysteries and does a great job of defining them as well as giving a list of cozy mysteries. This challenge is NOT restricted to what is on their list, it's just to be used as a guideline in case you need some hints on what to read.

So, here are the rules...

1. Choose the level you wish to participate:
Level 1 - Snoop - Read at least 6 books
     Level 2 - Investigator - Read 7-12 books
Level 3 - Super Sleuth - Read 13 or more books

2. The challenge runs from January 1, 2013 and ends December 31, 2013.

3. You don't have to choose your books in advance. If you do, you can change your list at any time during the year. Books can overlap with other challenges.

4. Books can be in any format - paper, audio, ebooks...it all counts!

5. You don't have to post a review, but I'm sure others would love to know about the books you are reading and may even want to add it to their reading lists.

NOTE: If you don't have a blog and want to participate, that's fine. You don't have to have a blog, just post in the comments section as you finish books. If you belong to a site like Goodreads and review the books there, that's fine too. Just leave us the link.

6. Take the button above, put it on your blog and post about the challenge. Then add your name to Mr. Linky below. Just click here. Please use the link of your challenge post, not the link to your home page.

7. I'm going to have one link for signing up, one link for completed reviews and one link for your wrap up posts. I won't be having a monthly link, just one for all reviews read for this challenge.

I'm not going to be using the Cruisin' thru the Cozies blog I started last year. I'm going to keep it simple with everything at this blog. Too many blogs was getting confusing :)

2013 Debut Author Challenge

January 1, 2013 – January 15, 2014

This is the third year of The Qwillery's Debut Author Challenge (DAC or Challenge). Again this year many of the 2013 Debut Authors will be writing guest blogs either before or after publication.  Near the publication date, each of the 2013 Debut Authors will be interviewed. Debut Authors' novels will be listed in a post on the first of each month. Please check each month's list to let me know if I've missed any debut authors. You can also let everyone participating know which book or books you will be reading in the comments to the post if you'd like.

What is a Debut for purposes of the Challenge?

  • The novel must be a full length adult fiction novel. For the purpose of determining a debut, the United States publication date is used. The copyright date or non-US publication date will not be used.
  • If the author has written YA or MG fiction, her or his first full length adult fiction novel will be a debut for the purposes of the Challenge.
  • If the author has written non-fiction and this is the first full length adult fiction novel, it will be a debut for purposes of the Challenge.
  • If a full length adult fiction novel previously has been published outside of the United States, but it is being published for the first time in the United States, it will qualify as a debut for purposes of the Challenge.
  • If the author has only written novels that are part of an established series or canon, his or her first original full length adult fiction novel will qualify as a debut for purposes of the Challenge.

The genres and subgenres covered by the challenge are Fantasy, Urban Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Historical Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, Paranormal Mystery, Horror, Science Fiction, SciFi Romance, Steampunk, Steampunk Mystery, Steampunk Romance, Supernatural Noir and all their permutations. The debuts are not YA/MG.

The object of the 2013 Debut Author Challenge is for participants to read at least 12 debut novels published during 2013 - one from each month of the year though you may read them anytime between January 1, 2013 and January 15, 2014.

Everyone who reads at least 12 novels (1 from each month) will have her/his name thrown into a drawing for a US$100 gift certificate to an online bookstore to be determined by The Qwillery. If you are going to participate you can leave a comment [on the hosting site], at the 2013 Debut Author Challenge post here or by emailing 2013DAC @ gmail.com.

This reading challenge is hosted by The Qwillery. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

The TBR Double Dog Dare

January 1, 2013 – April 1, 2013

The TBR Dare is back again for a third year; except this time it's much more intense.  It's not just a dare, it's a double dog dare.  Dakota and I double dog dare you to join in the fun.

But, remember, especially those of you who do not participate in reading challenges, the TBR Double Dare is not a "reading challenge;"   it's a dare.

We dare you, no we double dog dare you to join in the fun.

The rules are extreme, but you can change them to fit your needs.  The TBR Double Dog Dare is meant to be fun, so rule number one is--have fun.

The goal of the TBR Double Dog Dare is to reduce the size of your TBR stack, to read those books you've had for years and always meant to get around to reading one day.  January 1, 2013 just might be the day.

If you agree to the full Double Dog Dare, then you pledge to read only books in your TBR stack as of January 1, 2013 from the start of the new year until April Fool's Day. Your TBR stack is officially defined as the books you have purchased  or have requested from the library as of January 1, 2013.  This includes books that have not arrived in the mail or at the store yet.  Dakota and I will be making exceptions only for books selected by my book club, and possibly not even those depending on what my book club selects.  If you're a member of a book club, then you know how that works. You can make whatever exceptions you would like to or need to make.

We understand.

If you don't want to sign up for the full four months, you can sign up for whatever period of time you'd like. We think it's more fun if people spell out the details of their personal Double Dog Dare in a post on their blogs, but you may do as you like.

We've posted a button for the TBR Double Dog Dare and hope that you'll use it on your own blog to help us get the word out.  And, if you'd like to post a link to this page or any page at Ready When You Are, C.B. featuring the Double Dog Dare, Dakota will make a special visit to your home to deliver a wonderful thank you gift.  Not really.  But she will let you pet her if you're ever in Vallejo, California and I can make some coffee and maybe some sandwiches.

If you'd like to join the TBR Double Dog Dare for a book, a day, a week, a month, or for the duration, please sign-up using Mr. Linky [at the host’s sign up post].

This reading event is hosted by Ready When You Are, C.B. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

Magnificently Magic Read-A-Thon

December 13, 2012 – December 16, 2012

Hey Guys!

So, I am posting it now even though it’s like... two months away, just to see if this is something that people are interested in!

But what is the Magnificently Magic Read-A-Thon?
Well, Christmas can be a very magical time of year with the snow on the ground (if you’re lucky), the pretty trees and lights all aglow and just the general feel of that festive time of year. Therefore, I thought it would be quite nice to have a readathon during December reflecting this wonderful time. (There may even be some Christmas surprises throughout the read-a-thon!)

The idea is to read any magical books.
That could be books with witches, books about fairy’s (or fey), books that just feel magical (*cough* Celia Ahern *cough*), books with a winter setting, or even Christmas themed books!

I have also made this two weekends before Christmas as, if you’re anything like me, the weekend before will most likely be incredibly busy with family things, last minute shopping, etc., etc. But if this date doesn’t work for you, please let me know and I’ll see what I can do!

*edit: The date is now all set for 13th-16th Dec*

Throughout the readathon there will also be a twitter chat and maybe some mini challenges - if you’re up for hosting a challenge or even a giveaway, please contact me here.

So there is still a lot of organising to do, but I just wanted to get this out there and see if people are interested! If you do decide to sign up, I would appreciate either a tweet or a post to say you are so that others can join in the fun! Also, that button at the top is free for you to “steal” as well.

Oh, and from now on, feel free to use the hashtag; #MMReadathon

This reading event is hosted by A Daydreamer’s Thoughts. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

2013 What's in a Name Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Welcome to the sixth What's in a Name challenge This challenge was originated by a young blogger named Annie, who hosted it for two years. When she decided to give up on being the host, I took over the challenge.

I credit this challenge with being one of the prime reasons for my becoming a blogger, so I am thrilled to be its new host.

Here's How It Works

Between January 1 and December 31, 2013, read one book in each of the following categories:

  1. A book with up or down (or equivalent) in the title: Deep down True, The Girl Below, The Diva Digs up the Dirt
  2. A book with something you'd find in your kitchen in the title: Loose Lips Sink Ships, The Knife of Never Letting Go, Breadcrumbs
  3. A book with a party or celebration in the title: A Feast for Crows, A Wedding in Haiti, Cocktail Hour under the Tree of Forgetfulness
  4. A book with fire (or equivalent) in the title: Burning for Revenge, Fireworks over Toccoa, Catching Fire
  5. A book with an emotion in the title: Baltimore Blues, Say You're Sorry, Dreams of Joy
  6. A book with lost or found (or equivalent) in the title: The Book of Lost Fragrances, The World We Found, A Discovery of Witches

The book titles are just suggestions, you can read whatever book you want to fit the category.

Other Things to Know

  • Books may be any form (audio, print, e-book).
  • Books may overlap other challenges.
  • Books may not overlap categories; you need a different book for each category.
  • Creativity for matching the categories is not only allowed but encouraged.
  • You do not have to make a list of books before hand.
  • You do not have to read through the categories in any particular order.

On January 1, I'll publish 7 posts, each with a Mr. Linky (one for each category and one for your wrap-up post), on this blog so you'll have a place post links to your reviews (bloggers) or leave comments (non-bloggers) as you finish up each category. You'll be able to find these posts during the year by clicking on the button in the sidebar. (I'll create those links on January 1.)

Tip: If you're ever struggling to find a title to match a category, check out what other people have read so you can get ideas or be inspired. And remember to be creative.

To join in, sign up with Mr. Linky below. If you aren't a blogger, just add a comment. If Mr. Linky ever disappears, either try again later or click on the Email Icon in the side bar and send me your information, and I'll add the link myself.

To use Mr. Linky: put your name or your blog's name in the top box and the URL (web address) of your blog in the bottom box. If you don't have a blog, use your tumblr account, your Facebook page or simply mention your intent to join the challenge in the comments.

Thanks to @Uniflame and @SuziQoregon for suggestions for, inspiration for, and confirmation of this year's categories. Feel free to suggest ideas for 2014 in the comments.

It's never too late to join!

I hope you like the categories! Have fun and good luck.

This reading challenge is hosted by Beth Fish Reads. For more information and to sign-up, please see this post.

2013 Colorful Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

I have not hosted this challenge in a few years since I took a break from blogging, but I wanted to bring it back!

The Colorful Reading Challenge is simple:
     1. Just choose 9 books with colors in the titles.
     2. The books can overlap with other reading challenges (because let's face it, we need them to.)
     3. Post your links to your reviews each month to share with other participants.
     4. The challenge runs from January 1, 2013 to December 1, 2013.
     5. Read to your heart's content!

When most people think of colors they think of the basics- red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple, white, black, and brown.  But don't forget, as Crayola taught us, colors have a wide array of tints and shades so don't forget you can include colors such as silver, gold, plum, pink, crimson, scarlet, turquoise, blonde, gray, pumpkin, the list goes on.

I am writing up a new post of ideas for books to read to get your blood pumping for this challenge! I hope you will join!  Sign up!

2013 Monthly Key Word Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

For this challenge I have chosen ten key words associated with each month in 2013. Your task is to read one book each month whose title includes one or more of the key words for that month. For instance, in January I might read Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. The key words are listed below.

GUIDELINES

* The title you choose can be a variation on one of the key words. For example- your title could include the word 'snowing' or 'snowflake' even though the key word is 'snow.'

*Key words can be tweaked. For example- You could read "Cinder" or "Ashes" for the key word 'Fire' and that would be just fine. If the key word is 'family' then your title could include the word 'sister' or 'mother.'If the key word is 'food' then your title could include the word 'cake.'

* Link up below to participate and add additional links any time you post about the challenge or post about a book you read for the challenge.

2013 Nerdy Non-Fiction Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

Welcome to the 2013 Nerdy Non-Fiction Challenge!!

Last year I got the urge to read more non-fiction books after all that dystopian and fantasy I read, so I created this challenge to help motivate me to do just that in 2013.

If you want to participate, feel free. If there's another non-fiction challenge going on that you would rather do, then go for it! My goal here is really just to encourage you all to read more non-fiction this year. I'm hoping to pick at least 10 of the categories and read both an adult and a children's book in each category. We'll see how it goes.

GUIDELINES

Levels:
Geek: 4-6 books in at least 2-3 different categories
Dork: 7-10 books in at least 4-5 different categories
Dweeb: 11- 14 books in at least 6-7 different categories
Nerd: 15+ books in at least 8+ different categories

Categories:
* Health, Medicine, Fitness, Wellness
* History- US, World, European, etc.
* Religion, Spirituality, Philosophy
* Technology, Engineering, Computers, etc.
* Business, Finance, Management
* Sports, Adventure
* Food- Cookbooks, Cooks, Vegan Vegetarianism, etc.

* Crime, Law
* Poetry, Theatre
* Politics, Government, Current Affairs
* Literary Criticism/Theory
* Cultural Studies
* Travel
* Crafts

*  It is not necessary to pick your categories ahead of time, but try not to read more than two books in each category so you can broaden your horizons.

*  The categories I listed are just suggestions. If you have a different category you'd like to add, let me know!

* When you write about the challenge or read/review a book, come back here and link up or leave a comment and tell me what you read and what you thought of it.

* If you're participating in a different non-fiction challenge, please feel free to still link up. It's always fun to see what other people have read in the different non-fiction categories.

2013 Operation Deepen Faith Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

This challenge has multiple parts. (You wouldn't have to sign up for each part. But. Ideally participants would be interested in doing more than just one.)

I. Wonderful Words of Life. Goal: Try the MacArthur method of reading one (short, NT) book of the Bible 30 times in a month (or close to it). I'm not asking you to commit to twelve books in twelve months. Your goal might be to do it just once. Give it a try. See if it changes how you read a text, see if it changes you. The 30 times can be all in one translation. But if you'd like, you can read it in as many translations as you like. Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, James, Titus, 1 John--any of those would be a good starting place.

II. Going Deep; Goal: STUDY one book of the Bible throughout the year. Read it at least four times. (You might even challenge yourself to read it twelve times--once each month.) If possible, read the notes in a study Bible. Or read a commentary book about it. Read or listen to sermons on it. Consider reading it in different translations. Get to know that one book well. Let God speak to you through it.

III. Deep and Wide; Goal: read multiple books of the bible in multiple translations.
For example that might mean reading four to six books of the Bible (OT or NT, whatever you prefer) in four to six different translations. The books wouldn't have to be long books. You might choose Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians, etc. Or you might choose  John, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John, Revelation. Or Luke, Acts, Romans, Hebrews. You can choose a group of books that makes sense to you. Books that you want to explore further. You choose the books, you choose the translations. You choose the pace.

IV.  Meditate or Memorize. Note the OR! Not everyone is comfortable committing to memorize Scripture. (I'm one of them!) Goal: Choose about a verse a week--or a verse every other week--to reflect and meditate on. It might mean memorizing it. It might mean writing or journaling about it. (Or blogging about it if you like.) It might mean praying it. Or studying it. It's taking the reading of Scripture into something a little more--worship. These verses would not be chosen ahead of time. I'm not asking for a list. This is all about choosing-as-you-go, choosing as you read, let Scripture speak to you.

V. Taste and See. Perhaps you're new to reading the Bible, not quite sure where to start, a bit intimidated... Goal: read one gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), read one NT epistle (Romans-Revelation). And consider reading one book from the Old Testament, I suggest Genesis OR Psalms. Of course, you could choose any OT book.

VI. Christian Nonfiction. Don't be afraid to give it a try. Read some theology. You choose the number of books to aim for. A beginner might not feel comfortable committing to more than two books. And that's fine. I want to challenge you to start somewhere. This challenge is for everyone. Not just for people who want to commit to reading twenty!

  • books about God (his attributes, his character, his names, etc.)
  • books about the birth, life, death, resurrection of Jesus
  • books about the Bible
  • books about Bible characters (Moses, David, Solomon, Abraham, Jesus, Peter, etc.)
  • books about prayer, fasting
  • books about worship or worship music
  • books about church life or church growth or church leadership
  • books about missions
  • sermon collections (sermon note collections), essay collections
  • biographies/memoirs of theologians, preachers, missionaries, etc.
  • books about pain, suffering, tough questions, etc.
  • books about apologetics
  • books about evangelism
  • books about end times

Sign up by leaving a comment [on the host’s site]. Be sure to let me know which of the six you're interested in joining. You don't have to commit to specifics. (You don't have to tell me which one book you're going to study. Or how many books/how many translations you're going to read. Or the number of theology books you're wanting to commit to.) Though if you have decided, then feel free to share! But you don't have to have it all exactly planned out in order to join!

2013 Contemporary Romance Reading Challenge

January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013

The Contemporary Romance Reading Challenge was originally created and hosted by Pearl’s World of Romance, then was passed on to Romance Book Maven. Due to time constraints, Fatin asked if I would host the reading challenge and I’m honored to do so. I’m keeping the details pretty much the same as to when Pearl and Fatin hosted the challenge, though I did make a requirement that the book be at least 100 pages in length or longer to qualify.

I enjoy reading this genre and I’m always looking for new authors and books to read. And here’s your chance to join me.

Reading Challenge Details:

  • Runs January 1, 2013 – December 31, 2013 (books read prior to 1/1/2013 do not count towards the challenge). You can join at anytime. Sign up on The Book Vixen’s blog.
  • The goal is to read at least 10 contemporary romance novels. As per Pearl’s original post:
“by contemporary romance I mean straight contemporary, so without paranormal, fantasy or time-travel elements. Sexy, steamy contemporaries are eligible and so are category romances. (i.e. Harlequin Blaze, Harlequin Presents, Harlequin Super Romances, Silhouette Desires, etc.).”

I’m going to elaborate on this a bit just for the sake of clarification: Books read for this challenge can be young adult, new adult, or adult. Romances with the following elements do not qualify for this reading challenge: paranormal, historical, time-travel, fantasy, science fiction, or mystery/suspense/thriller.
  • Books can be any format (bound, ebook, audio).
  • Novellas that are at least 100 pages in length, as well as full-length novels, will count for this reading challenge.
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are allowed.
